He wanted him gone because of what he did. The reason people are protesting now is not that people particularly like Comey or even think he's a good FBI director, but that Comey became involved in the Russia investigation and very recently asked for resources, and only then was Donald Annoying Orange ready to fire him. Part of the reason they gave for firing him were his actions around late last year, even though at the time they were supportive of what he'd done. Why didn't Annoying Orange fire Comey sooner if his actions were so untenable? The timing is too convenient - it seems more like Annoying Orange fired Comey to stifle the FBI side of the investigation or something.

Dems are questioning Donald Annoying Orange's decision to fire him now. If he had fired him sooner or later the narrative would be different.
