Author Topic: RTB should be default. (Here come the pages)  (Read 3435 times)

Anyone can always add their own IRC chat to Blockland. or even use the steam group to overlay in game.

Lol

i like rtb but i wouldn't say that it needs to be default

If there's ever an update that includes more than just bug fixes, it should be an in-game friends list and irc chat.

No wonder I have to have the least datablocks

If you can, I have a quick request of another addon that can change RTB prefs
Chrisbot's Support_Prefs. Much cleaner interface compared to RTB's server preferences. You can leave your current RTB server prefs installation in your folder, and have this one as well, and use this one instead. All the prefs that are normally registered to RTB's  server manager is also shown in chrisbot's server manager.

like it'd be cool if it was default but it won't be

Op probably doesn't know Blockland Glass is a thing.

There is literally no reason to use RTB now, rtb can't handle the new addons limit anyways and has a stuff pref system compared to glass.

Ephialtes does not hold any sort of copyright. He owns the intellectual property rights associated with the project, along with the legal details that he put into the addon, which included not being able to make derivatives.

Not to be rude, but we're talking about RTB, not that, and yes, I do know that is a thing.

Hey you realize Blockland Glass is RTB's Replacement right?

Or are you confusing the Pref system with RTB? If so you should probably change the title to "Why don't we have prefs by default"

If not why would you want outdated RTB to be default? It would cause crashes if the old addon limit is passed, and to some people running dedicated server they would crash randomly.

RTB is outdated, its dead, and if it gets worse with Updates  for some reason, Badspot should CRC all RTB Variants to avoid problems and point people to either a pref system or BLG

I can't even log into Blockland Glass because the website apparently doesn't support a "forgot password" button.

So if Glass is a replacement to RTB then that's horrifying.

Then why not request said feature? Glass is still in its V1.0 days, and even though that should of been a day one thing it was probably not done for security reasons since depending on how forgot password is done it can be exploited.

At one point, immediately after RTB was shut down, I was thinking about making my own version of it.  I wound up not doing so for quite a few different reasons:
  • The time and effort I would have to put into creating and maintaining such a mod has been clearly shown to be something I cannot maintain for years or even months at a time for a single mod.
  • RTB wound up being a huge target for anti-Blockland attacks, which is something I don't really want to get myself involved in dealing with.
  • RTB worked because it was a unified userbase.  Either you had RTB or you had nothing; there was no competing mod of a similar form.  After RTB died, this category of mod became open to anyone who could make anything similar to RTB, which means there will be competing mods, so any individual RTB successor will have huge problems getting a large backing.
  • The necessity of maintaining an admin base would be similarly beyond me, and I can't possibly check every add-on myself for problems.

Not to mention that there's an element of trust required if you want to have any kind of auto-update feature, either for your mod or someone else's.  I rip auto-update code out of every mod that has it, because RTB and Slayer were the only two mods that I trusted to do this correctly.  RTB died and Slayer got pwned, and now there are no mods I trust with auto-updating.

I see where the writer is coming from, the RTB Mod (Ephilates) is very useful, the server control etc. As far as I'm aware, daprogs, simba and a few others is re-developing the MOD manager side and the IRC.

With this being said, not everyone finds it as good as others, it's kinda like a social network in a way, with the IRC feature etc. I guess forcing the Mod on people could cause issues?

Prefs and a decent GUI for your server controls are the only thing I would like default.

Agreed, the instant install mod manager was nice but its litteraly just drag and drop now, so its not a big deal anymore.
