Author Topic: Keys for Steam users?  (Read 1261 times)

How come I don't get a proper key? Is there some technical problem with giving keys out through Steam? I'd really like to be able to host a proper Dedicated server that's actually a dedicated computer and not just a headless server running on my desktop, and I'd rather not pay for the game twice. (I'd buy it and give my old key to my friend, but that's just not possible and Badspot already said no trading of accounts.)

So... Are Steam users ever going to get proper keys for their accounts? Is this a work in progress thing? Planned? Already decided not to?
Is there any reason Steam purchasers don't get keys?

Hang on, I saw the convert-to-steam thing...
Is that add it to Steam and keep your normal key, or does it stop accepting that key and you can only play the Steam version?
If so, that's messed up.

I'd like a way to have a non-Steam dedicated server, due to the way Steam shuts down games when running them on different machines at the same time and it considering the Dedi server a game.

Be sure to read through the discussion. There are a few instructions that I missed in my original post.

Yes

To rest of OP: Steam users have a key ( i think ) but it's tagged as steam-only, meaning it can't be used normally.
Other keys can definitely be tagged as steam-only if stolen or something.

Steam users do not have a key at all.
If you 'convert' your key to Steam, it can still be used normally.
In the event that your key is compromised (stolen, given away, etc), and that your key was already 'converted' to Steam, it can be made into a Steam-only ID, which will only authenticate through Steam.

Steam users don't own a key.

No, this would make too much sense. It's not happening.

I didn't ask for how to host Dedi and play on it. I asked for a normal authentication key.
If it's on another machine, Steam still detects it and tries to log that user out. It leaves the server running, but you have to have SteamGuard to log back in again which is a pain to do on machines you don't have access to except over the net since you'll have to set up a control program session every time you want to restart the server. If it's on the same machine, I already do that because I know how to google stuff, but it means the server is on my home wifi and not on a server hosting company's wifi, so if my family's watching TV/video, the server lags. It'd be so much simpler to just have a non-Steam dedicated server.
Why can't Steam users have keys?

I want to host it on another machine and not have it complain that I'm playing games in multiple places. I haven't seen a solution to this. I want a 24/7 server.

It's not that they can't. It's that they don't. There is no solution to this unless you buy a second key, or a non-steam key if you wish to stick with just one.

So you can't buy alts on Steam?

So you can't buy alts on Steam?
You'll need a Steam account for each alt.

Actually I have rebuttal.
I was looking around on the game properties to see what the hell I was looking at.

At one point I had clicked on something along the lines of a "Game Key". When I checked the paper containing my BLID key, it somehow matched.

There was also a similar process used for those who got Portal 2 from a disc rather than buying online.
So it may be safe to say that most Steam Games use game serials that identify the merchandise of the said product.

In short; there is a way to identify BLID keys from steam itself.

What in the forget are you even going on about.
What game properties?
What did you click on that was along the lines of a "Game Key"?

While on the library section of steam, right click on Blockland, and select properties.

A window should show up. From here, you can mess around with anything from backing up the game files from completely deleting BL. It was also the place where I may have found where my key is.

It been a while though. I don't normally play BL through Steam on my comp, as it's got a .dmg bug where it doesn't save your preferences.

Wait, did you buy it on Steam first? Everything I've seen said Steam users don't have keys if you bought it through Steam. Do you mean a button on that menu, or something in the game files?
