Author Topic: Saving bricks from other servers  (Read 1521 times)

Would it be possible, in theory at least, to restrict remote saving in order to prevent build theft or send back only your own bricks? Is this client-sided, server-sided or both?

EDIT: This might be the wrong board, I meant to post to Modification Help. Does this fit here or should I move it?

no, it wouldn't be possible (well it might actually but), it would also violate the EULA if you figured out how to do so

I'm not talking about adjusting the source of the game, I'm talking about an add-on that is able to fulfill the subject of this thread. Is that really illegal?

Yes, however I'm pretty sure you can like edit the models of the bricks very slightly and they wouldn't load with the person who saved it's bricks so they can't copy it, although that's kinda a richard move

If you're worried about people taking credit for a build, just hide your name all over whatever you're building

I've read the EULA carefully and I don't see how this add-on would violate it.

it probably is but you'd probably get revoked

it would have to be client-sided in the "save only your bricks" sense

Technical issues aside, philosophically it doesn't make sense.  You want to cripple the game just to deal with a handful of people who are jerks.  But after you do that, they will just find some other way to be jerks and you (me) will have wasted a huge amount of time with very little accomplished.  The jerks will always find a way to be jerks.  Just ban them.  Post your builds in the gallery here or on the rtb forum or on your own website if you want credit and adoration.

To clarify: this is the end of the discussion of this issue.  The game is about finding builds online, saving them, and doing what you like with them.  I'm not changing it and if you find some crazy way to stop saves from working, I will patch the game in order to fix it (already done it once, please don't waste any more of my time).
Listen up noobs, saving is here to stay.  If you can't handle someone else playing with your build, grow the hell up.

If you start doing gay stuff to break my game, I'm going to start banning you from the master server.  This is a war you don't want to start because I'm the only one with nukes.

You can simply change every default bricks uiname to completely disable saving to the average user. The more advanced player can circumvent it with little-to-moderate effort depending on the situation.

Well, then make a more advanced anti-save add-on. I can think of several ways to handle this that make it impossible to prevent on the client side unless you want to manually map bricks to the originals.

or send back only your own bricks?

This would be really helpful though, I don't get why it's not already default. As a client-sided option, that is.

As a client-sided option, that is.
that'd be really useful

Just in case, I'm not posting this just because I'm afraid of someone stealing my thing or something. I'm just wondering if it would be possible.

It is possible, but it shouldn't be done. Why do you want to prevent people from saving your build?

curiosity killed the drydess mario, i suppose
