Author Topic: My School is Selectively Censoring Students on Politics  (Read 4837 times)

that's irrelevant. the first amendment doesn't give you the right to hang posters on other people's property. I do think it's stupid for them to allow posters for some candidates and not others, but you wouldn't have any luck in an actual court setting. that's not to say threatening to sue won't get anything done, but what you should really do is protest it. get your friends and some other students who agree together and figure out a way to protest it. moltenkitten's solution is stupid and will probably not work
The school doesn't own the building. It's an old catholic school facility that my district rents from the diocese. The posters make no permanent difference. I'm not going to take them to court but I'd like an explanation for the hypocritical enforcement of said "rule"

On the far opposite end of the unpopular viewpoint scale, I started a (satirical) Satanist Club at my southern highschool

I would first complain directly to the teacher, and ask why he took it down. Maybe he has a genuine reason, like "We can't have posters in this area because we are planning to paint over it". He probably wont. Tell him that it is discrimination, and if he proceeds, have your parents send a scary email or call to the school. My extended family is all lawyers so I could probably get some legal advice if you want it.

The excuse the school will probably try to use is that "It's a distraction," to which you need to remove all blame from yourself. Tell them firmly that you haven't done anything wrong, and that it is the responsibility of every student to keep themselves focused during school, and there are many things more distracting than a poster. They'll probably tell you that they will have a staff meeting to discuss what you've said, and hope it will go away if you wait long enough. Ask them when exactly the meeting will be and if it could be soon, as you feel there is serious discrimination at the school.

If they do the above tactic of trying to avoid conversation with you and hoping it will go away, I recommend writing to one of many student's right organization around the US and having them directly contact your school.

Best case scenario, they let you keep up the poster.
Worst case scenario, they ignore you and violate your rights. (I could get a legal letter for you to send them if this is the case)
Most probable scenario, they take down all of the posters to avoid putting up yours.

I've been putting up with this garbage for the last 4 months so if you want any other advice, feel free to ask.

This is a violation of the 1st Amendment. It's selective discrimination, saying that "We'll allow X candidates on postes, but not Y candidates." Banning political posters altogether would not be a violation as students do not have full constitutional protection, for the purposes of a distraction-free educational environment.

Now, why they let students hang up posters to begin with, is a mystery.

How's that whole Spartans for Satan thing going, anyways?

Uh, we are super inactive because genuine Satanists don't exist outside of 80s horror films. Also, school is out for summer.

We did fly a pentagram banner in the air as the school was released on the last day, prompting 2 students to collaboratively seize and destroy it on their way out. There was really no nonviolent action I could retaliate with, since the offices had shut down and I had to get to my bus. It didn't really bother me though, because school was out anyway and I wouldn't be using it again.

Can we actually see a picture of the sign? I can see the case for it being "disruptive" if it's significantly bigger than the others.
In fact, you should post a picture of some of the other posters as well.

I don't think political posters (at least, posters specifically about political candidates) belong in a school. I go to a public high school that's crazy liberal (there are lots of communists & socialists) and I never see political posters here, though we do have lots of political activists in other regards.

There is the picture of the sign. I don't have any of the others at the moment, but they are very similar. We actually modeled our sign after the others.

I don't see how this is offensive in any way.

My health teacher basically forced us to sit for a 3 hour long presentation by, as she puts it "transgender and person of color individual". Basically due to stuffty school rules collapsing on themselves we had a to get a permission slip signed to go. Naturally a few of us didn't want to go or get it signed, so she made up, on the spot after asking us why it wasn't signed yet, that we had to write a 5 page essay if we didn't get it signed. Not soon after commenting that "it's all boys, didn't you notice" in reference to the people who had yet to get the slip signed. She never even said what the essay would be about when pressed on it. It was all just a way to force her stuff down our necks. The presentation was today. It was as god awful as you'd expect.

I don't see how this is offensive in any way.

it's offensively lackluster imo

It doesn't exactly seem like a political poster.
It seems more like a joke poster. If anything, it would be more offensive to Annoying Orange supporters. It looks like you're mocking them.

It's half a joke and the color printer at school restrictions made us have to print it with a margin. It was done in like 10 minutes, it took longer to hang the damn thing than to make it.

But somehow that's offensive enough to prompt removal?

Maybe they just want something more professional?

Absolutely do champion the right to express yourself equally at school, but then think about the irony of it afterwards.
