Author Topic: Why are we still doing the Olympics?  (Read 5721 times)

The Oylmpics is a waste of money and resources. These olympic stadiums are so big they can't be used for anything else so they rot away. Countries hosting the olympics get screwed over when the olympics are over.

Why don't we do something more beneficiary? Like another space race. Which country can get to Mars the fastest? What country could build a space station on the moon the fastest. Why not do all of this?

what's funny is that the cost of the olympics alone could finance a couple manned missions to the moon and then some

Isn't it like roughly $4bil just to set it up?

Nasa could use that money.

Well, to be fair, it is extremely dangerous to go into space. If something goes wrong, help wouldn't arrive for who knows how long or not at all, depending on your location, and you'd probably die way before it happens.

more people have died from olympics-related deaths than space-related deaths tho

The potential site for the new olympics is filled with poop water and diseases.

Not gonna argue that.

But help was closer to them than a hypothetical spaceship at 15000 m above the atmosphere. You'd have to make another rocket completely to save them and, therefore, lose more money.

space would also yield tons of technological advances, just like it did during the space race

Chances are if you have a manned mission to mars it's going to be filled with doctors and medical gear. They aren't going to send people to mars with no medical help.

So chances are you'd literally be safer in a space ship to mars because you'll have multiple doctors on staff within arms length from you.

Response time is faster than an ambulance driving all the way to the olympics.

I live near Lake Placid, which is where the 1980 winter olympics were held.  They still use most of the venues for recreational activities and minor league hockey events.

I used to figure skate and ice dance a lot. I performed (with my partner) in a couple of competitions there. Really fun place.

True. High risk, high reward

Yeah, Olympic facilities in the more developed countries get put to good use.
The large majority of the London Olympics is still being used for sports events or has been taken on for other purposes.

Plus, the Olympics brought in far more money to the UK than it cost us.

Why arent we ants who use every moment of our time being productive
