We have to be accepted in by the other member states.

I think that if we were to leave now, and wanted to return in say 10 years time, we would eventually get in. I think the EU would see the benefit of having us (we do give a lot of money to the EU). But they would richard us around, and they would play hard with any negotiations.
I don't think we'd be on the waiting list for the length of time that Turkey has been, but it wouldn't be a simple "sure, let's forget you ever left" sort of thing.
