There are more details below, but even if you fall outside of the refund rules we’ve described, you can ask for a refund anyway and we’ll take a look.

???

100% chance steam's developer contract says "refunds are given out at our sole discretion"

Legal digital distribution is tricky.

If I played 30 hours of NMS and asked for a refund just for the lols then I'll get my money back and basically got free entertainment value.

That is technically theft and steam is technically handing out free games at that point.

So yes, they could sue steam.

They do investigate cases where people try and abuse refunds.

Abuse
Refunds are designed to remove the risk from purchasing titles on Steam—not as a way to get free games. If it appears to us that you are abusing refunds, we may stop offering them to you. We do not consider it abuse to request a refund on a title that was purchased just before a sale and then immediately rebuying that title for the sale price.

i bet a big part of that investigation is how often or if ever, you have refunded games before.
steam is usually pretty cool about refunding things. but if you did it every few months for new titles, even if you had good reason to. they might cut you off.

well if they signed a contract that allows steam to refund their game for someone, even outside of the standard criteria, they actually can't sue steam
that's pretty well the point of a contract

yeah and lose the case because they literally agreed to it lol

They agreed to refunding games before the 2 hour mark.

They didn't agree to refunds with people playing more than 30 hours.

30 hours worth is basically money well spent, that's practically a free game right there.

The thing is though steam's refund policy isn't set in stone. Yeah the guidelines state 2 weeks of ownership or 2 hours of gameplay. But those are just guidelines this isn't the first time valve's allowed refunds that went over the playtime.

Basically valve isn't worried about getting sued because they know they can't. The devs agreed to have refunds available for their game. I guarantee nowhere in their contract it states the max amount of playtime for a refund.

By allowing people to get their money back on games with over 24 hours of playtime they are basically giving out free games. Because 24 hours is practically enough to play an entire game and then never touch it again.

That's where they can get sued on. Look it up.

There are rules and regulations on digital distributions which overrides policies.

Why do you think you can't refund opened CDs? You already opened it up and played it and you could have potentially copied the files on the disk.

People have been refunding it on PSN after spending more time on it than what Steam remotely allows. They haven't been sued.

The only way you can refund stuff on PSN is by doing chargebacks through your bank account.

Which guess what, you'll get your loving account banned that way.

Same goes to steam if they deny your refund.

Refund this stuff and move on

Sony's PlayStation Store refund policy states that you can cancel a digital content purchase within 14 days from the date of transaction - provided you have not started downloading or streaming it.

If you have started downloading a game, you can't get a refund "unless the content is faulty".

Which it's not because the game still is functional on PSN.
