I just found out that most Americans do this (idk if this is true or not), I think that's ridiculous.

depends on what I'm doing over there

Let's assume your going to a friends house to hang out or for a non-fancy dinner at families.

well friend's house no but just the dinner if there's nothing else probably

Depends on the flooring or if they're wearing shoes themselves

if that's what they do, otherwise no

I usually ask. More often than not I take them off.

yea basically there's too many factors to just make a yes or no on it

also why

I read shoes as shorts and was thoroughly confused

Almost never if it's a families house (unless I'm just stepping in to do something), otherwise yes.

i take my shoes off and set them aside regardless of who's home I am in.

Normallhy I dont ask unless its a fancy sort of flooring like a carpet or something or if I have any contaminants on my shoes like mud

That would be disrespecting their house. You leave your shoes by the little step in front of the door in every house ever.
