The multiplayer only game was released by Facepunch on the 11th December 2013 and is still in early access.
It is available on OSX, Linux and Windows.

OPs comment:
Started out with 2 friends, all got to level 6 and some level 20 guy went into our base and destroyed our sleeping bags, and you could tell that this guy was a 15 year old bellend who was wanking whilst destroying our base because he lives life on the edge.

really dont like this game. i cant make any sort of progress without a high level player with armor and guns destroying my sticks and stones because he can. its pretty much impossible to start in a server with any sort of population, most people just kill you on sight

i think the furthest i got was making a water purifier on a private server before giving up

it's a lot more fun when you have a band of friends working together and doing stuff

This, I still don't really like the game that much mainly because every time I get some cool gear and a home some richard head raids it and slaughters me,
I've only found a few single friendly people who helped me out in my time playing it.

I love the game but HATE the xp update.

I don't want to have to grind for 7 hours just to be able to make a stuffty pipe shotty

I play mostly solo though, it'd probably go faster with a group.

Anyone down to play some time?

join the tet enterprise server, a few friends and i got a base up and running. it's really quiet, and it'd be nice to have a threat when adventuring. it's a smaller map but only 20 player limit

If you hate losing your stuff to starfishs try hurtworld.
Same concept but the thing i like most is your armor weapons etc.. dont drop when you die unless you kill people yourself. Kinda like runescape i guess.
Only your resources and other stuff drop

home alone 4 occured, the people who robbed my house couldn't find the stairs to the second floor upwards and couldn't find our chests, all they achieved was losing 2 C4.

but in rust it's so fun to make trap bases to shut people in and kill them with grenades

You can kill geared players really easily and get some good stuff

My friends and I have made a cylindrical base centered around a furnace, made of metal plating + armored doors with a floor to shoot out and little murder holes to kill door campers.

We've been building up resources but we try to put them into things that we won't lose easily/would be annoying to raid.

Aside from getting camped by an esp/aimbot hacker with an xbow for about 20 mins until he got bored of shooting our metal walls and left, everything has gone surprisingly well. The only problem is that one clan has c4/aks/rockets 2 days into wipe.

Even if they did waste resources on raiding us, they would get very little, because we try to use up as much as we can on upgrading our building before logging out, so our chests have next to nothing inside.

Rust becomes an entirely different game if you can play with some friends that aren't full on handicaps. It's so much easier. Solo is brutal.
