Aunt May is a big change too (the actress is older than she looks though), but we have had her getting increasingly younger across adaptations.

I'm not saying this change in MJ will ruin the movie, but it will take a bit to get used to.

update: i believe they are dying zendaya's hair red for the role

mary jane's previous actresses haven't been naturally red-haired either, so again its not that big of a deal

yeah thats dumb as stuff too but this is arguably dumber. there are a lot of good black characters in the spider-man books that they could use but they decide to randomly change the race of almost every established character in this movie for no reason.

Mary Jane though has pretty consistently been portrayed as a fairly curvy, pretty, long-haired red-head. Audiences aren't so familiar with any drastic changes to her appearance.

and? is she not fairly curvy? pretty? able to grow and dye her hair?

her and first appearance of MJ with middle aged peter parker

okay yeah i dont really have a problem with that^^^^

it's one character and it's not even that much of a difference visually (see above)
donald glover for spiderman
he's here to drop it like the nasdaq

from a narrative standpoint it seems like something that shouldn't really make a difference. in most cases the appearance of a character would be kinda nominal in comparison to what they're actually meant to contribute to make a compelling story. assuming, of course, the actor they choose isn't terrible

that's just theory i guess though, idk much about spiderman specifically, in some cases obviously certain marks or features do serve a valid storytelling purpose. does mary jane having red hair mean a lot in the story or is it just how she's always been portrayed?
