In AUS we just show off the boxes and keep the games themselves behind the counter, people take the box of the game they want to the counter then they give you a box with the game in it once you pay.
seems really odd to me that they case it in like that, is there an issue with people stealing game boxes?
Uhhhh, they give you a box? Down here, you take the box to the counter and then they put the CD, manual and any other paper slips inside it (under the desk there's a stack of draws with A-Z envelopes for every game's contents). The only exceptions are for sealed games which obviously they can't open, although I have seen a couple really stuffty $1 games at EB that they don't even bother with.
And yeah, you'll notice the case thing with American chains that have stores over here, like Toys 'R' Us or Target. In order to curb stealing, the products are locked away in glass cases which are alarmed; only way to get the games out is to have a staff member use their key to disable the alarm and the lock. I remember those bloody glass cases being over here as far back as 2000, if not earlier.
