"the person i liked didn't win! democracy is dead! down with electoral college!"
"the person i like won, get over losing despite being the majority"

yes we are but we could be here better

That's why we need to make it great again

despite who won or not we really need to abolish the electoral college cause this is the 5th time that happened, and the 2nd in recent history

it's really not acceptable

i am aware of the other failures of the system

whats a civics 101

it's there to stop our entire electoral system from being dominated by a few stupidly massive cities

america isn't a democracy. it's a constitutional republic. the entire purpose of the electoral college is to ensure that, while certain states hold more power, the smaller states are still important and heard

It's really easy to find the person who knows nothing about american government. Just look for the people saying it's not fair to have the college lol

We aren't a direct democracy and never claimed to be. Democratic Republic

That being said, if you win like... 42.1% to 42.0% of the popular vote in a state, why do you get 100% of the electoral votes in that state?
This is the only thing wrong with the electoral college.

thing is it really doesn't
smaller states still usually get ignored because of the electoral college, instead it makes candidates focus on the states that have a lot of electoral votes that can go either republican or democrat, which always decide elections.

small states usually do not matter at all and most likely do not decide elections due to their 1. small population so small electoral votes still, it may take away electoral votes from the big states, but that really doesn't do much and 2. usually go to the same state each election

also, thing is if you lose the popular vote you should not be able to still win, someone losing the popular vote is losing the majority of america's vote and that person is not what the majority of people wanted

and another thing, the electoral college allows the electors (not elected by the people, mind you) to change their vote no matter who won that state to the candidate of their choosing, going against the will of the people. last time this happened was in 2004 and although it is un-likely that them switching their vote alone can decide the election, there's a chance it will, which is extremely undemocratic

Eon stop claiming that america is a democracy it isn't lol. You're calling this system undemocratic when it was never supposed to be a pure democratic government. We are a democratic REPUBLIC not a democracy. I'm sure you are absolutely clueless about how they differ since you're spouting nonsense about how americas not a direct democracy

Representive Democracy

Say it with me now.

Representive democracy (and I guess i should have specified that in the op.)

Also, voting against the will of the people is undemocratic, and will result in a civil war

contrary to popular belief cities don't all vote for the same person. when any pro electoral college guy brings this argument up they seem to think cities all vote for the same person but they don't. you aren't going to see just forgetin new york city and los angelas deciding the election in a good popular vote system because that would be autistic and that's not how numbers work. there's always a few million people voting for both sides.

Except when it comes to popularity it doesnt need to be everyone, only most, and it will be most every time.

Cities have become heavily liberal, meaning there would never be another conservative in office, effectivly removing democracy entirely.

And that means, without a doubt, anyone outside of the city would be forgeted.

On a semi-related note, we need to ID voters

democracy wouldnt be removed if the majority of the people kept voting liberals in, no

Also, voting against the will of the people is undemocratic

Being a stuffty contrarian is also undemocratic
