whats a civics 101
it's there to stop our entire electoral system from being dominated by a few stupidly massive cities
america isn't a democracy. it's a constitutional republic. the entire purpose of the electoral college is to ensure that, while certain states hold more power, the smaller states are still important and heard
thing is it really doesn't
smaller states still usually get ignored because of the electoral college, instead it makes candidates focus on the states that have a lot of electoral votes that can go either republican or democrat, which always decide elections.
small states usually do not matter at all and most likely do not decide elections due to their 1. small population so small electoral votes still, it may take away electoral votes from the big states, but that really doesn't do much and 2. usually go to the same state each election
also, thing is if you lose the popular vote
you should not be able to still win, someone losing the popular vote is losing the majority of america's vote and that person is not what the majority of people wanted
and another thing, the electoral college allows the electors (not elected by the people, mind you) to change their vote no matter who won that state to the candidate of their choosing, going against the will of the people. last time this happened was in 2004 and although it is un-likely that them switching their vote alone can decide the election, there's a chance it will, which is extremely undemocratic
