Paul makes good points in this video, people are flipping stuff and saying "2016 is the worst year Evar >:C"

Because:
A. They didn't have their way
B. Famous people, they don't even know died
C. It's trendy to say '2016 sucks :P"

"Daddy, why do people say 2016 was the worst year? No one wants to talk about it. "

2016 was really just a year full of trash meme
hope history doesn't repeat itself

stocking used to always finish her posts with red japanese characters
Seem to be pretty random.

2016 was a stuff year for me, school was stuff, several things happened that were my fault, and I got to realize how forgeted my situation with glaucoma is, and I got to find out all the reasons to hate almost everyone from my extended family. To top it all off, I did practically nothing all year which feels like the worst part to me.

People acting like there is no good reason to call 2016 a bad year are insane. No dumbasses, nobody said that 2016 was worse than the midst of World War II or the Great Depression or something stupid like that. It obviously wasn't worse than the Black Plague, so the frame of reference is the last 10-15 years.

I'm going to explain in detail as a writing exercise why this year was so bad. I'll break it up into 3 sections: Art, Tragedy, Politics.

SECTION 1 - ART:

- The film industry did historically badly this year. The films we got were mediocre or bad.
A few prominent examples:
  • "Independence Day: Resurgence" — $389.7 million
  • "Allegiant" — $179.2 million
  • "Gods of Egypt" — 150.7 million
  • "The Angry Birds Movie" — $394.8 million

The films that did gross well were largely terrible:
  • "Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice" — $873.2 million
  • "Self Delete Squad" — $745.6 million
  • "The Jungle Book" — $966.5 million
  • "Angry Birds" — $394.5 million

The halfway decent films this year showed that Hollywood is moving away from original thought and focusing on remakes that don't hold up:
  • "Captain America: Civil War" — $1.153 billion
  • "Finding Dory" — $1.027 billion
  • "Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them" — $746.1 million
  • "Rogue One: A Star Wars Story" — $675 million

The original films this year that did well were all aimed at children:
  • "Zootopia" — $1.023 billion (actually a good film)
  • "The Secret Life of Pets" — $875.4 million

Disney/Marvel expanded and created some of the most formulaic and generic films I think I've ever seen:
  • "Moana" — $203.3 million
  • "Alice Through The Looking Glass" — $300 million
  • "X-Men: Apocalypse" — $543.9 million
  • "Captain America: Civil War" — $1.153 billion

The very best films of the year did rather poorly, some just breaking even:
  • "Kubo and The Two Strings" — $69.9 million
  • "Hell or High Water" — $31.1 million
  • "Arrival" — $144.4 million

SECTION 2 - TRAGEDY:

- This year has been terrible for the US in terms of terrorism, mass shootings, and celebrity death.
2016 showed an increase in the severity and appearance of mass shootings :
  • Wikipedia lists 9 US mass shootings in 2015, compared to 15 US mass shootings in 2016.
  • Wikipedia lists 46 deaths from shootings in 2015, compared to 63 shooting deaths in 2016.
  • Wikipedia lists 43 injuries from shootings in 2015, compared to 75 shooting injuries in 2016.
  • That's an increase of 6 major shootings, with an additional 17 deaths and 32 injuries.

2016 has had far more terrorism than we did 5 years ago, and CIA opposition has slowed:
  • There were 1986 Islamic Terrorist attacks in 2011, compared to 2475 attacks in 2016.
  • There were 9086 deaths from terror in 2011, compared to 21240 in 2016. — $179.2 million
  • There were 16921 injuries from terror in 2011, compared to 26677 in 2016.
  • That's an increase of 12154 deaths and 9756 injuries over just 5 years.
  • While the Islamic State lost almost 2/3 of their territory from June 2014 - June 2015, they lost just 9% from June 2015 to June 2016.

Please respond with questions or criticism. I've thought about this a lot and would love to explain more.
