i dont mean to sound rude but; duh. of course they are. amiibos are a huge money maker for nintendo

I thought it would be crazy if they didn't but I didn't hear anything about it. I don't remember if the 3ds had amiibo support and the switch is a mobile console

in the presentation they said the joycons had amiibo reader stuff in them i'm pretty sure, new 3ds has built-in amiibo support, original 3ds needs an external thing

Nintendo intentionally chose the dry period to launch their product to make sure their initial sales figures are smaller than they'll be. They'll have no troubles getting this going at all.

Why would they do this? Why would a company intentionally handicap itself like that? Hell why would they not even announce the supposed titles coming later this year?

In Nintendo's eyes, it's better to have consistent (or raising) sales figures than to have an initial spike and then a massive slump. Nintendo's corporate culture works different to some place like Microsoft, and it's the reason they've forever been obsessed with under-delivering units on launch day. They want their bottom line to be on a steady increase, and that line will also hopefully match the title quality/size for the product (as more units are sold, more developers product Switch games).

Also, I think internally they know that there's a lot of risk in the product, so they want to take the launch really slowly, gather feedback from the relatively small pool and act rather than have a LOT of customers get angry at frustrated at once. Because it's the dry season, they'll also be selling less units meaning less "not enough stock" complaints. It also gives them months and months of time to build trust into the product's image and make WAY more sales in the Christmas rush than you would get on a console with no history behind it.

Microsoft and Sony want to focus on the now, and making the biggest splash on launch day. Nintendo take a more gradual approach, as their culture dictates that careful balance is better than infrequent explosions.

If their culture the main reason they are doing this then why doesn't Sony do the same thing? They are both Japanese companies.

So can I expect there to be a decent line up of games by holiday season?

Sony is very interesting. Did you know that the team that worked so loving hard to get the PS1 out the door (including Nintendo-traitor Steve Race) were fired not 6 days after the final E3 showing that would essentially hand that generation to the PS1?

Sony and SEGA are/were far less "traditional" than Nintendo. Keep in mind that Sony's Interactive Entertainment division HQ is in California, and SEGA's American team had a lot of say over how the products and marketing went. Nintendo, however, have stuck to their roots and do it by the book.

One can only hope.

I still find it strange that they wouldn't even announce games that are coming out within the year. I'm guessing they are waiting for e3?

I hope it's not just Mario Party or something like that.

Yeah I'm pretty sure they're waiting for E3

Nintendo's been adding DLC into their games recently (Smash Bros, I think Mario Kart 8?). Plus if you consider amiibo's DLC (since they add in game capabilities like Skylanders do) they make a ton of cash that way https://gamerant.com/nintendo-amiibo-sales-splatoon/

Although I have no clue if Amiibos will work with the Switch.
Nintendo's DLC is significantly more reasonably priced compared to EA's DLC, and aside from a few characters, they don't strip out features from previous games just to re-release them as DLC in the next title. Amiibo have manufacturing and shipping costs to factor in.
That and EA has a lot of single player games.

I will be infuriated if a smartphone app is required

Thats a damn good price
i loving knew it
i told you so that it would be cheap if you cant keep the free games

I don't like paying for online, but dang am I releaved for them not going 60$

The truth is out there.
