Author Topic: Microsoft cancels Platnium Game's Scalebound  (Read 3938 times)

microsoft has a bad history of misjudging the quality of games, and that goes both ways

either way games like halo wars 2 and crackdown series aren't huge titles, just serve as low quality money grabbers. if they did scalebound right it would pull in a huge amount of money

I know McJob is our local game dev expert n all
but couldnt they just have redone scalebound instead of just trashing it all?
giant monster fighting/hunting games arent all that common and I can imagine a good few people want more of them

I dont know but they probably thought it would be better to say a game was cancelled than to say it would be delayed 2-3 years more

If MS still has the IP then they could remake or finish it in the future with another developer i think

looks awful, they stole the textures for Sin from FFX on that monster at 0:41

i would love a game where you're friends with dragons
i would not love a stuffty game where you're friends with dragons
if i wanted that i'd go play the stuffty how to train your dragon game

edit:
on a side note should i try out MGR: Revengance? Reading about this game made me wanna try out platnium's games and since I wont get to play this, i was thinking i could try revengance

There is no reason not to be the lightning in the storm, I'd highly recommend playing it. I don't think it's as replayable as I'd like but it's still pretty fun, and the DLC is a nice supplement,

to be 100% honest platinum games has really gone down the stuffter so maybe this game seriously was just that bad.

though i guess that's a bit unfair. the game quality is still good, and it's still really fun, they're just releasing a steady stream of licensed bullstuff with the same exact gameplay mechanics as all of their other games. staling their whole niche, in a sense.

Examples, please. Specifically games that they said were awful that turned out to be good. If it's a frequent thing, sure, but I can't even name any isolated incidents.

Halo Wars 2 is in the top 100 and is the best selling console RTS of all time (and will still be on Xbox One, as well as Windows 10), while Crackdown is in the top 130 and flattened games like Black Ops 3, FIFA16, Dishonored, RAGE and many other games on the Xbox 360.

Both games are financially successful franchises for Microsoft's platform with a history and reputation. Scalebound might have a developer with history, but it's a brand new IP, and clearly the gameplay didn't stack up.

Subjective statements, given the only way to known that information would be to see the playtest data (or have a magic crystal ball), which Microsoft holds. Microsoft put a lot of money into first/second party developers when publishing; if they can't make a profit, that's the end of the road.

but couldnt they just have redone scalebound instead of just trashing it all?
Microsoft has presumably already spent a large sum of money to fund development for the title (as-is their role of the publisher). Restarting the project would mean essentially writing off all that cash as a loss AND THEN refunding the entire damn project to the same or higher amount. And, what guarentee would Microsoft have that they'd do better this time around? If it's the same people...

I had to reread this because I thought you said best selling RTS and I wanted to chuck my phone through the window.
