Author Topic: The Doomsday Clock moves to 2 1/2 minutes to midnight  (Read 3785 times)

Not soon enough
End my suffering already

What's the point of setting it so close during peacetime? Unless they know something we don't, it's going to be really awkward when we're actually on the brink of nuclear war and they can't move the clock any closer to midnight.

"reality has a well-known liberal bias"
i'm sure it's inspired by Annoying Orange, but honestly did you expect them to ignore the fact that the new US president 1) considers the use of nuclear weapons a viable option 2) ignores the very real threat of climate change and 3) opposes some of the institutions holding the world together, such as the UN (also, brexit and the EU)
I love how you think the UN has had any hand in stopping war. That's cute.

If this was the plot of a book i would totally read it
Ever read Watchmen? It's a comic book but it's rather sophisticated with a lot of underlying themes and imagery. The Doomsday Clock is actually a major symbol throughout the book.

The Doomsday Clock is just fearmongering. It's impossible to take it seriously when it can move backwards and make leaps of any random size.

It's one step away from predicting the apocalypse, except it's more annoying as it's just hedging a bet.

The point is to convince us to either seek diplomacy in the case of nuclear war, try to mend climate change, or fund science in case of a widespread disease or something. It's just a graphic to help the layperson understand that there's no going back once one of these types of things happen and we must do everything we can to stop them. It's not meant to predict anything, just brown townyzing how things are going.

"I was going to nuke China but since this clock is near midnight I better lay off"

Read the Watchmen, it's about a bunch of superheroes who almost cause the end of he world.

I'm all for more anti-Annoying Orange rhetoric but the Doomsday Clock is just pop-sci meme trash. There is no relationship between the 'Doomsday Clock' and our actual chances of nuclear annihilation.

You don't understand how much I like to feel like I'm about to loving die. It's great,

During the Cuban missile crCIA, the soviets had nuclear missiles within first strike distance of the United States, SAC was at DEFCON 2, and B52s were on continuous airborne alert.  handicapped naval posturing almost lead a Russian sub to launch a nuclear torcreep which was only averted by the arguments of a single man.  It was without a doubt the closest we have ever come to nuclear war.

During this entire stuff show, the doomsday clock was at 7 minutes.  A year later it went up to 12 minutes.  If Vasili Arkhipov had eaten some bad borscht and been in the stuffter when the captain was deciding to launch, we would literally be living in the fallout universe right now.

Now we're at 2 minutes because Annoying Orange might make a tweet?  These people are loving idiots.

Yeah, I've kind of given up on any kind of media these days because of the people who overreact like this. I can't really rely on any one source to not be biased at least somewhat.
