What is Savage Archipelago, you might ask?  Picture yourself: You're on a ship, bound for fabled lands out in the vast Verian Ocean, perhaps to trade with them, perhaps to tighten relations with them, perhaps to conquer and subjugate them.  The sails are unfurled and you are full of spirit, ready to take on the quest set before you, but suddenly find yourself caught up in a storm.  Unable to control your ship, you are swept over the high seas for a few days, as you feel the boat straining and creaking underneath your feet.  Soon enough, you find yourself in a lull at sea.  The winds have stopped, and your ship drifts slowly over the expansive ocean for seven days.  Eventually, storms return with a heavy hand and toss your ship once more, until you find it wrecked upon an unknown isle.  You know now that there is no turning back – no one coming to rescue you.  As the storm breaks, you find yourself surrounded with plants and animals unbeknownst to you.  Will it kill you?  Will it allow you to live?  Only your resourcefulness, creativity, and will to survive will determine that.

How do I join?

In order to join, you will need to fill out an application below.  Note, however, a few things:

  • This takes place in the Iron Age, so there will be no gunpowder technology, etc.  You can be at a lesser tech level if you want.
  • When accepted, you will be shipwrecked with other players.  Your language will be decided along with whoever else is shipwrecked with you.  Your apparent ethnicity can be whatever you want, (E.g. "North African", "Central European", "Gallic", "Middle Eastern", "Middle American")
  • All listed fields are required.  Feel free to adjust the format to your liking as long as it pertains to this format in order listed.  Simply replace bracketed fields with the proper information.  Ex: [name] might become Conan.  (Parenthetical notes get removed.)
  • Once accepted, feel free to add any supplementary information to your liking.

  • All actions can be subject to moderator scrutiny.  This doesn't mean that you will be constantly "put in your place" by moderators.  If you're not corrected or addressed, perform ad-lib.
  • Note that if acting ad-lib, do not exploit this to say that you gather resources at an alarming rate.
  • If you don't know what's going on, feel free to ask questions.
  • We don't want to leave you blind, so have some resources that should be helpful to you:

Backstory:  
The second daughter of a Jarl, she was provided the opportunity of a good life, but as disfavored by her father.  She had to then fend for herself, finding the merits of subsistence more noble than leaching off of serfs.  She became very close to the serfs over which her father rules with a heavy hand.  She thus became estranged from her father's house, and during one night of merriment and camaraderie at the mead hall, her father sent soldiers to retrieve her and put her in her place.  She then challenged the captain to a duel, which she won.  When this news spread, disgrace fell upon the family.  In order to gain back her family's honor, she was bound to subjugate nations to the west to restore honor to her family.

Special note that once three hours have lapsed since the last application, or all players within the next landing group volunteer to land, then the shipwreck will occur.  Otherwise, the next batch of applicants will be left to land separately.  Moderators can also force shipwrecks to occur.  (Note that this only applies when players join.  If you build a boat at some point, then moderators cannot choose to randomly crash your boat.)

The first ship strikes the northern shores of the main island!

Aǹni, Volgya, and Heide Baumsen are stranded ashore.

The following is salvaged from among the wreckage:  A considerable length of rope, an iron shortsword, and a few strips of salted meat.

Aǹni comes to, realizing that the ship had run aground.  She clutches her head between her palms as she feels the pulsating pain of having just struck one of the hold's beams.  She gets up, stumbling about as she reaches to find something to assist her walking.

"Is anyone there?!" she shouts, searching for survivors.  She sees that many of the crew members had died, and finds herself staring out a huge gap in the middle of the ship where the waves and sand are washing in and out.  She looks out of the ship and sees land, with many trees, and land spread far.  She sees the terrain rise, but cannot make out very much due to the misty rain falling down.

She once again calls out in horror, realizing she may as well be the only one alive, louder this time, "Hello?!  If anyone is alive please speak up!"

She continues looking around the ship and checking to see if any of the bodies have a pulse and/or are breathing.  Realizing that the rain might worsen chances of survival, she gets the dryest wood she can find and sets it on a dry place within the ship, sheltered from the rain.

Baumsen's body reluctantly drags his mind to consciousness, and his first reaction to awakening is coughing the water out of his lungs. He overturns a thin portion of bulkhead which had fallen on him. As he begins to compose himself, Baumsen hears the call of a woman.

He begins making his way towards the owner of the voice he heard, as he quietly takes in the devastated state of the ship. Every time he passes the fallen, he stops to bless their soul with a prayer.

Aǹni, hearing a large wooden construct getting turned over (As Baumsen climbs out of the wreckage), she stops, realizing that someone is alive, and sets down a few dry planks on the dry crate where the wood had been set.  She makes her way toward the voice, and finds herself at the massive gap in the ship.  She sees Baumsen across the gap on the other side and promptly shouts out to him, "Oi, you well?  Not injured?"

"Yes, lass. Scraped and bruised, but destined to live."

Baumsen glances at a deceased slave that had been crushed while the trireme collapsed.

"The same cannot be said for the rest of the ship, I fear."

Aǹni looks up to the sky, noticing that the rain is slowly receding. "I gathered what dry wood I could find.  No idea what fate fare us on the land."

"Name's Aǹni," she says, tapping her staff to the deck floor once.

Volgya wakes up suddenly, as an incoming wave of water surrounds him.  The water wakes him, panic sets in over him almost immediately.  He gasps for air, his hands tighten around the sand on the ground beneath him, as he finds himself.  Coming to the realization that he is on the beach, he begins to calm.  He stands up, his joints ache, the pain from a headache catches up with him as his senses fully return to him.  He is hungry, he is dehydrated, he is tired.  Survival is Volgya's priority, regardless of the commotion in the distance.  He begins walking up the beach toward the treeline, on a mission to find food, water, and shelter.

Aǹni suddenly hears a man coughing and looks up to see a man stumbling as if aimlessly, yet clearly determined on a mission, and shouts out to him, "Oi, where ye be going?"

The man reaches the treeline before Aǹni's call reaches him.  Volgya finds a few stones on the wet, sandy, semi-stony beach.  Other than that, a drizzle is falling from above, at least that might serve as a source of water for now.

As the light rain comes down on his back, Volgya works quickly to retrieve a few flat, smooth stones from the beach.  He begins picking the most intact leaves he can from the trees, and arranges the stones and leaves into a makeshift bowl on the ground, to collect rain.

Noticing that the man didn't hear him, Aǹni remarks, "The man mays'well be mad, or perhaps desperate.  't be better off if we stick together for our own provision." She then turns to the man across the gap in the, "Ye got a name?"



As the light rain comes down on his back, Volgya works quickly to retrieve a few flat, smooth stones from the beach.  He begins picking the most intact leaves he can from the trees, and arranges the stones and leaves into a makeshift bowl on the ground, to collect rain.
The broad leaf begins to collect a good deal of water, although, with the receding rain, this clever invention's benefit seems short-lived.  In looking up, however, Volgya notices some berry bushes with magenta berries on them.



Volgya has discovered the Aphassus Berry.
