Author Topic: Savage Archipelago — Rain Receding — [Day 4, Morning]  (Read 40215 times)

"Christ, Christ, we need to get away from that thing," he said to Anni, looking back again, "Let's dry off at the fire, and... and move toward the ocean again."
"Aye aye, but ehm..." she agrees, then glancing around as her eyes trace the stream, "We should stay near the fresh water.  Shall we follow the river back?"

Gus does the first thing he can really think of in this situation, and begins to try and either barrel roll out leap out of the to let the beast fall past him. No way he's staying in the way of that thing falling.
Gus leaps to the side.  The creature, shaking the ground as it rolls by, cries out in agony as it tumbles, smoke seeming to follow it.  The creature takes a fall off a greater ledge and rolls over a number of trees before falling into the rocky stream bed below.

Gus hits the ground, holding his head as the beast rolls along and past- feeling the shaking of the dirt under him as it tumbles further down, and down, and down until he hears it crash through the trees and into the stream bed below. Blinking, Gus crawls over to hunker down and stare down where it fell from- checking to see if by some miracle the fall either killed or injured the creature.

Baumsen attacks the Zamolyke with his staff, attempting to gore it upon the whittled top.

The creature moans and coughs and struggles to get to it's feet, but gradually rises to a standing position.  The creature shakes itself to remove and grass, sod, dirt, stones and debris off from itself and then begins to cough.  It hacks and heaves, puddling out sooty smoke, and eventually vomits a small amount of magma.

It then turns to face Gus, grunting and trying to trot uphill with a limp.

The Zamolyke's carapace is severely crushed, but it still struggles to crawl at Baumsen to make a feeble attack.

Using an opening in the cracked carapace, Baumsen hooks the Zamolyke on his staff. He brings the dying creature to his dwindling campfire, and revives it with small branches followed by slightly larger ones. A second branch is used to remove the Zamolyke from the staff - and to pin it in the fire.

Gus looks around for a moment, trying to see if he can find something big enough to throw down at the creature as he tries to flee further up and get a better vantage point- looking around at his surroundings. Maybe the creature crashing has unearthed a boulder? Or perhaps Gus is simply getting his hopes up.

"I am no Arterius! How can the gods expect me to defeat such a beast?!"

The creature squeals and screams from being burned, but then dies in the fire, it's singed appendages curling up underneath it.

(Ran out of time on my break earlier, but this is a part of the last update.)

Anni and Volgya see the beast tumble down the hill, flatten the trees and fall into the rocky stream bed behind a hill around 40 meters away.  Nevertheless, they see sooty smoke and steam rising, followed by hacking sounds and the sound of the punished Ünthur vomiting, but the sounds of the water in the stream bed rapidly turning to steam, which they then see rise over the crest of the hill.

Anni, witnessing the spectacle, pauses, "It sounds weakened... I may be mad...   But—Maybe we can instill fear even in the fire beasts by slaughtering their kin."

"I don't... I don't think it's a good idea, Anni, I don't think we are ready," Volgya said, panting from shortness of breath.  He looked up to examine his surroundings, seeing the monster lying weak in the river.  He squinted at it, finding it difficult to see in the dark.

Aǹni suddenly realizes the implied magnitude of the task.  "Yea, perhaps it be best to follow the river back to the beach."  Aǹni takes her torch in hand and begins to pile what supplies they can take in the box.  "Let's get a move on."  She reaches to the box, pepring to lift it.

Still looking for a response to this.

Volgya helps Anni with the box and trucks toward the beach.

Sorry, my bad!

There are several large stones that if unearthed, could damage the beast.  There is a boulder nearby that would be able to roll down and strike the beast, but he doesn't know if his strength will allow him to accomplish this task.

Gus temporarily seeks cover so as not to be seen, but then realizes that the beast, if like most, wouldn't have made the mistake of going over the edge of that ledge.  Perhaps it can be outwitted.

Volgya helps Anni with the box and trucks toward the beach.
As they shuffle away with the box, Aǹni trips over a root and stumbles over, and with a short shout, falls on her behind.  The box tumbles over, along with its contents.  "Sorry!" she apologizes nervously.

She gets up and begins to brush herself off.

After a moment, Volgya hears something swimming in the water.

Volgya waves a hand dismissively before going to collect the contents of the box.  The splashing of something in the water next to him alerts him, his view snaps to the river, and he holds his torch over the water, in an attempt to see what made the commotion.

Volgya only sees unusual swirling of the semi-murky water as something seems to dive deeper underwater.

Aǹni notices Volgya's quick movement and freezes, asking "What is it?..."

Volgya shook his head, "This island... this island is full of strange, strange things.  We need to get off of it as soon as possible."
