As with many so-called illusions, this effect really demonstrates the success rather than the failure of the visual system. The visual system is not very good at being a physical light meter, but that is not its purpose. The important task is to break the image information down into meaningful components, and thereby perceive the nature of the objects in view.[3]
it's because the shadow darkens the white square's color enough to be exactly the same color as the dark square.
but then why does it look like a different colour to square A???
honestly they do seem like the same color to mei can even match them to other squares that arent marked
some research suggests that people with autism aren't as susceptible to optical illusions
