He could have done the main dungeons and sold his heart containers and bought stamina from the demon statue.  I see a lot of people who are good at the game go for 3 hearts and all stamina haha.  You really don't need hearts at all if you're good enough at the game.  They're only there as a security blanket for messing up.  Stamina on the other hand, having more is actually useful.
