Trying to stop something you consider morally reprehensible is widely considered the ethical thing to do across just about every culture. The different between plants and animals is that plants don't have a nervous system or a brain, effectively rendering their lives as voids. Without the ability to feel any pain or other sensation nor make any conscious decision through brainpower, we can assert that plants don't hold value on the same stage as other living species. However, all life has value, and I would also object to needless deforestation or the killing of plants simply for the 'fun' of it. We couldn't survive without plants--but meat is simply a luxury.
