I've just recently got back to playing some Dwarf Fortress and the last thread was too old to bump, so I figured I'd make a new one.

What is Dwarf Fortress?
(Taken from Bay12 themselves found here.)

"Dwarf Fortress is a single-player fantasy game. You can control a dwarven outpost or an adventurer in a randomly generated, persistent world.

Well golly gee, what are some features?
Although Dwarf Fortress is still in a work in progress, many features have already been implemented.
  • The world is randomly generated with distinct civilizations spanning centuries of detailed history, hundreds of towns, caves and regions with various wildlife.
  • The world persists as long as you like, over many games, recording historical events and tracking changes.
  • Craft treasures and furniture from many materials and improve these objects with precious metals, jewels and more.
  • Defend yourself against attacks from hostile civilizations, the wilderness, the depths, the dead and creatures of the night.
  • Honey, wax, pottery, windmills, waterwheels, soap, plaster, wool, eggs, dyes, cheese, glass, animal training, papermaking, parchment, bookbinding and much much more...
          (and so on)
  • The combat model includes skills, body parts, individual tissues, material properties, aimed attacks, wrestling, one-time opportunities, charging and dodging between squares, bleeding, pain, nausea, various poison effects and much more. Attacks and other movements extend over several instants, allowing you to deliberately catch enemy blows or plan your counter-attack.
  • Hundreds of animals and other monsters, including many that are randomly generated for each world.
  • Various dwarfy ways to have !!FUN!!
That sounds life-ruining great! Where can I get it from?

Dwarf Fortress is created and maintained by Tarn and Zach Adams of Bay 12 Games. The game is and will always be free, and can be found here.

Any screenshots or gameplay?

Of course, children. As the game is rendered in various ascii-esque tiles, it may look confusing at first. This can be remedied, however, by installing tilesets which can add basic sprites to the game (i.e. pictures instead of symbols)

The Hamlet of Tyrrany, a fairly well-known story of the end of a Fortress

Boatmurdered, a legendary succession mode series involving rampaging zombie elephants and all sorts of other !!FUN!! things

wow, i've heard about this game but didn't realize it was this in-depth that's pretty awesome actually

The thing that I'm still kind of taken aback by is that I've been playing DF on and off since about 2010 but I'm still learning new things about it every single time I play, and I'm still losing in !!FUN!! and unexpected ways with each new fortress.

You know how people say Dark Souls is fun because of the feeling of progression and how each death gets you a little bit closer to learning how to beat that enemy or part? Dwarf Fortress is like that on steroids. The game is just so massive that the possibilities of things you can do or things that can happen purely by chance are near-endless and the game is only half done ffs.

aw man i used to play adventure mode all the time i might get back into it but i wont remember any of the key bindings

i also need to learn how to actually play the main dwarf fortress game mode too but i mean

"dwarf skeleton hanging on top of statue no one can reach"
that must be singed

i've always heard of this game but never thought to look it up

it looks really interesting

I'm just waiting for the windows lazy newb pack to update to the x64 version and then I'll start playing again

Rememeber losing is always fun.

my longest playthrough on adventure mode was like 1 week and it was honestly some of the most fun ive had in a game. i had about 3 followers, dope gear, and had already pillaged like 3 villages. i lost 2 of my followers attempting to raid some mercenary camp, which was then raided by a couple trolls or something after i was halfway through and i managed to kill one before getting my legs ripped off by one of the mercenaries dogs (or some pet idk)

ive never made it anywhere really in the actual fortress gamemode. one of my dwarfs developed a special interest for loving tables once so that was cool i guess

I love to generate worlds then read the history in legends mode, there are always really old beast-gods inhabiting my world who have slain other beasts and leveled whole villages. reading about wars is also really fun. it is quite astounding just how detailed this game is. it's difficult to get into but is very fulfilling when you're having fun.

yeah the learning curve is wild, and the whole ascii theme def doesn't make it any easier
be prepared to use every key on your keyboard

i only wish this thing had multiplayer so you could co-op manage fortresses

would be loving dope as one person starts a little !!FUN!! project without the other guy knowing, and attaching a !!FUN!! gate to a lever used to control the front gate

>forgotten beast walled into the caverns
>player 2 gets bored
> d-n the wall
>!!FUN!!

There was a competition once to set up the best self destruct device triggered by a Big Red Button Lever.

After watching the entire Vinesauce series on this game, I really want to get into it. Though, where should I start? It seems like learning piano with how complex it is. Also, I'm not entirely sure my computer can run it. My specs are as follows:

Processor: Intel(R) Core(TM)2 Quad CPU  Q8300  @2.50 GHz  2.50 GHz
Installed Memory (RAM): 6.00 GB
System Type: 64-bit Operating System
