Jae opens it, leaning back, one eye closed for fear of what may be inside.

Norum turns his attention back to the backpack, then to Daniel, who began his approach. "Hey, could be an explosive. Perhaps scan it? I gotta take a call; our contact is giving Elena trouble."

Norum moves outside quietly and takes out his phone, presses a few buttons on its display, and presses it up against his face. A second later, Elena's visual display lights up with a notification. Norum is calling.

The pick up is near instantaneous.

"Ya?"

Daniel nodded at Norum, and continued to approach the backpack with caution.  Too much noise, he thought to himself, scan wouldn't do me any good.  He instead decided to examine the backpack the best he could from where he was, looking for anything suspicious about it.

You don't notice anything off about the bag itself.

Ryde would quietly look around for any high places inside the warehouse just in case they are being watched.

The only place that someone could be watching you from above is the office in the back corner of the building. The lights inside are off.

"Insurance fraud? What the forget is wrong with you?"

There is a moment of absolute silence from the end of the line.

"He can offer legitimate work fixing cars if you have the skills. I think. So what are you thinking?"

Amanda checks to see if the door is locked

The door isn't locked. Its ajar, in fact. You get hints of a biting, awful chemical odor, as if someone is burning antifreeze.

Jae opens it, leaning back, one eye closed for fear of what may be inside.

There's a note in the box addressed to you directly. The inside of the box is covered in a powder of some sort.

"Hey, sorry... Dan is one clingy motherforgeter. I didn't give him your phone number—must've ripped it off my phone while I stepped away. I'll call him."

Daniel is absolutely sure that there must be something wrong with the backpack and gets a closer look.

Ryde walks over to Dan and taps him, pointing to the window to the upstairs office. He then says, "Can you scan that?"

"He can offer legitimate work fixing cars if you have the skills. I think. So what are you thinking?"
"Uh huh. If I could still do legitimate work, I wouldn't be homeless."

Jae pulls on latex gloves to avoid any of the powder from touching his hands, picking up the note and reading it.

"Okay,"

Elena drops the call.

"Uh huh. If I could still do legitimate work, I wouldn't be homeless."

"Elaborate?"

Jae pulls on latex gloves to avoid any of the powder from touching his hands, picking up the note and reading it.

The letter is short and was typed.

"Stop playing your loving games, cunt. If you don't return the money you loving took from us, next time we'll kill you, burn down your house and make it look like you were never here.

If you want to keep living, send us $75,000 dollars to this address."

What follows is a cryptocurrency wallet address, in a hexadecimal string.

You are overcome with the urge to cough, and begin hacking violently.

Norum takes the phone off his face and says "bitch" under his breath, then sighs, checking what unholy onslaught Dan unleashed on his phone.

"Elaborate?"
"I lost my legitimate job because these stuffty arm augs of mine don't even have the finesse to crack open a can of beer, let alone use the tools needed to keep an engine maintained."

Ryde walks over to Dan and taps him, pointing to the window to the upstairs office. He then says, "Can you scan that?"
Daniel jumps as Ryde taps him, stifling a shout as he turns and faces Ryde, "Jesus," he says, then looks up at the window.  "What?  No, I can't... I can't just scan individual objects, I scan the whole place, and there's too much noise in here to scan," he snapped back, his brow furrowed.

Ryde lets out a quiet "Sorry", continuing on in the warehouse.

Yea I'll give this a shot

Norum takes the phone off his face and says "bitch" under his breath, then sighs, checking what unholy onslaught Dan unleashed on his phone.

Dan has sent you about a dozen messages, pleading with you to help him, begging to know whats happening, wondering here his plug is.

Ryde hears a police siren in the distance, though the other two may be starting to feel that they are overstaying their welcome.

"What can you do then?"

Her tone is sympathetic.
