on the contrary i think the time to protest is when the obviously radical dangerous side is there because the police presence there wasnt really sufficient and i think it was important for counterprotestors to be there just to protect the people of charlottesville and other counterprotestors

(to my knowledge) the police were never tested, and didnt have a reason to be until counter protesters where involved (or did they ever find out what happened to that helicopter?). expect it to blow up in your face when you fight fire with gasoline

You word this as though everyone counterprotesting saw violence as an appropriate response to the protest. Most of the protestors (on both sides) were peaceful and you shouldn't expect a violent response if you're not being violent yourself.

I mean protest groups have blocked highways before, I can see someone thinking it would be dangerous to do a U-turn on the highway

automobiles aren't considered weapons so there's no self-defense law that applies to it.

i could beat an attacker to death with a chair but it isn't considered a conventional weapon either

also in cases where a vehicle is used to assault it's classified as assault with a deadly weapon

its 100 percent self defense to hit people with anything, including your car if they're trying to kill or hurt you.
