Author Topic: I'm having serious problems with my dorm room (things get complicated)  (Read 11628 times)

they probably just want to take the path of least resistance when in comes to housing students

sad considering I had heard people say (before I initially met housing) that they were very understanding and sympathetic

so the building's power is still inadequate to support everyone running fans then?

so the building's power is still inadequate to support everyone running fans then?

if you mean the dorm I'm currently staying in, I have absolutely no idea at this point

the power went out for seemingly no reason and that was w/o AC units in every dorm so I guessss...?

I mean I'd think an AC unit would use less power than eight fans on high

AC units use a compressor, which takes a fair amount of power
small window AC unit consumes 115V
looking up fans, if you can fit 8 in your room (just how big is your dorm room lol), then they are probably small desk fans, and looking up desk fans shows that they can be powered by USB, and USBs are 5V

pretty sure the compressor in the AC just eats power, since it's actually doing something instead of just blowing air around
pumping fluid and pressurizing it is a bit more difficult

two of them are large box fans and the others are pretty large as well

there are only two "desk fans", the rest are jet engines

every page this stuff gets better, this thread is loving killing me lmao

why the forget are you still posting? seriously, every single one of your posts in this thread is you trying to belittle my problems or make fun of me for being so frantic about me possibly falling behind in classes (which is starting to happen btw)

it's starting to remind me of what unova did with freek's dog, on a lesser scale

Well in all honesty you are overreacting a bit. My dorm has no AC either and getting sleep the first few weeks was pretty rough. It's still liveable. And you should realize they're probably hanging onto that final room for a good reason-- it could be handicap accessible and they wish to hold it in case somebody really needs it. At the hotel where I work, we won't sell our last handicap room even if the rest of the hotel is sold out. I imagine the principle is the same in college housing.

Also, processing room change requests a few weeks after move-in is standard procedure at most colleges. I agree it's a weird rule but you're complaining about the status quo.

I definitely hope you end up getting a better dorm assignment, but you are putting an extreme amount of effort into this and probably just getting on the nerves of housing ppl.

Housing's job is to make sure people living on and off campus are reasonably accommodated and living comfortably. If I'm "getting on their nerves" that's pretty indicative of the motivations of the people I'm dealing with.

Speaking of, I met with the community director today, and it was a waste of time. I learned nothing new and she offered me several rooms (hey hey there isn't just one empty space like they loving said) that were all objectively worse than where I'm currently living. I brought up the rooms with no names on the doors and she insisted that they were filled. She wouldn't verify it, either. She told me it would be demeaning or something to housing services to check if the rooms I had found were empty or not.

I'm gonna change my strategy. I'm going to talk to the Dean of Students, because it would be a good idea to bring this up with her if it's going to affect my academics. I also have two theoretical room-swap ideas in mind:
  • I could ask one of my roommates whether he would know any one of his friends who'd be willing to swap into this room. He's a party dude, so there's bound to be a ton of options. I already have one in mind, but I'm not sure he's interested.
  • Our dorm is right next to what is considered sorority HQ on campus. If I can find three girls that'd be willing to swap with me and my roommates in order to be closer to the action, not only would I score a better room for myself but also one or two for my two roommates. This is the harder one to pull off, obviously.

this is pretty ridiculous dude. take the A/C.

In order to get an AC, I would need to have a medical form signed by a doctor saying that is a medical necessity that I have an AC unit in the room. That's only for things like "if it gets too hot I'll faint even if I'm drinking a lot of water" or severe allergies or something like that, which are both things I don't experience. It also wouldn't fix the commute to classes and I'd still be working by desk light past midnight with two sleeping roommates who are probably getting annoyed with me at this point that I'm not in bed when they are.

just stick one of those portable fans up your ass

we have eight right now

that's the loving problem

there's a good chance that a doctors note is a lot more lenient than that
so far it sounds like you're not able to function well in the heat, that may be enough

wait you have eight up your ass
