Author Topic: Tactical Nuke's first computer build! (MINIMIZNG COSTS)  (Read 9104 times)

so my computer is also something like 5 years old and I've made clear how it's dying right now in previous topics (mainly the graphics card coolers are not working as far as I can tell from using speccy)

I'm planning on making a computer build, my first, for the same price as what I bought this computer for, $1500 $2500

here are my current specs:

Here are my requirements:
  • needs to be able to pass all personal benchmark tests (Just Cause 2, Blacklight Retribution) plus Draw with Jazza's graphics benchmark tests (IDK what they are) and run max shaders (maybe even soft shadows) on BL at 60 FPS for over 100,000 bricks (is this reasonable idk)
  • needs to be able to run FL Studio, with all it's plugins and stuff, smoothly, and it should be able to store several recordings and audio files (AKA two large hard drives and a ton of RAM)
  • needs to be able to have my cintiq hooked up to it and work perfectly
  • I would like it if I had multiple 4k monitors, though IDK how much that would cost
  • needs to have a reliable, effective cooling system that won't break on me like the last one did, someone brought up a liquid cooling system in the last topic I made but I don't know how that works or what it costs
  • I've heard of something called shadowplay that I want to look into, apparently it allows you to record games smoothly or something which would be good for recording my playthroughs of games like BL, ROBLOX or the Dark Souls trilogy
  • needs to play audio outstandingly, right now my audio's forgeted up in iTunes and it will only play bass for songs like The Beatles's "Taxman" (this is not super important, though, my recording instructor told me that when I hook up an audio interface to my computer it will automatically become the sound card and make it sound much better)
  • needs a case that will fit all this, look pretty and still remain compact and portable
  • needs to work without bugs or annoying stuff like that (loving duh)

here is what I've got so far (this will be updated as things progress):

I need help cutting down costs without sacrificing quality, I need at least $99 leeway for the Schiit Modi 2

added the Intel Core i7-7700K Kaby Lake Quad-Core 4.2 GHz LGA 1151 91W BX80677I77700K Desktop Processor to the list
this puts me at about a third of my budget

if there's a site I can use to bring down costs that'd be phenomenal

use a ryzen 5 1600 or r7 1700 instead, you'll get some pretty good benefits in performance since it seems like you'll be doing some multi thread stuffs.
ill put together a build that uses the best stuff that you can get at that budget. i may end up getting a dedicated sound card to avoid interference that the mobo's audio may give off since it looks like you're really serious about audio stuff.

at first I read the first bits and thought you just reposted this topic
it's pretty much exactly the same, except you have a budget

probably should figure out which graphics card you're going to want first, since that's normally a large portion of the budget

just how portable and compact do you mean, like a laptop, or like a desktop?

i highly recommend 16 gigs of ram for fl studio and at least a half terabyte of storage, i only have 250 gigs and i can't store all my plugins 😂
if you're going to get two 4k monitors you'd be paying a lot more and i don't really think you need it, just 1440p would be enough imo
you'll also need at 2-3 hdmi ports, two for the monitors if you still want two and one for the cintiq
not sure how to make a good build but these are the things i personally recommend if you want a solid build with all your needs, and 1500 will most likely let you fulfill them

here you go

also i strongly recommend updating the bios when you get the pc, as old ryzen bios's arent that stable. once updated tho, everything should run smoothly.

I'll let you make the build and then have everyone else review it in case people have different ideas on what should be used
particularly I only really know the intel processors and I'm unsure about the one you're suggesting and how much better it is

yea I took influence from that
he has a budget too

I don't know where to start, but here's the requirements

this is a desktop I'm making, but I want to be able to transport it to and from college without issues

r5 1600 and overclock it otherwise get the 1600x. you don't need an i7 or r7 imo
def don't need a x370 or similar-spec'd board
at least 2x8gb ram for sure
don't go 4k yet

are you going wired or wifi for internet
edit: might want one of these then. i use the 1300 and it's been perfect for me so far but i don't pay for ridiculously fast internet

normally I go wireless (if you mean ethernet)

also what is this overclocking everyone keeps talking about
it sounds like you're pushing the hardware beyond its limits which sounds impossible to me

Overclocking is simply making your CPU faster by increasing it's clock speed. It's pretty easy to do on modern motherboards, and as long as you have a good enough cooler that can support the OC (the stock ryzen coolers are known for allowing you to safely OC by a few hundred megahertz, a pretty good speed increase) you'll be fine.

you can increase the core clock speed of your GPU and some CPUs. it's very easy to do, but requires an aftermarket cooler (except for ryzen apparently) for the CPU and can damage or shorten the lifespan of your hardware if done incorrectly.

my CPU is an i7-4790k. the "k" signifies it can be overclocked. i haven't overclocked manually but i believe my mobo automatically boosted the speed by some MHz.

this is my GPU. i'm not sure how to get the boost clock but i have manually overclocked my gpu by about 80 mhz, core and memory. i've had issues in the past overclocking higher than 100 so i keep it at 80.

overclocking your gpu just a little bit can crank out a few extra frames in games. overclocking your cpu helps greatly in cpu-intensive games and multitasking.

you could always pick up a used GTX-980 for 210$ since they're no longer praised as the best GPU ever since the 1000 series came out but this specific listing only has 3 hours left, so there are probably others

y'know I spent a good couple of weeks focused on other stuff but I came back to this and realized that queeba made the build without considering the monitors

so
uh

yo anyone got any good keyboard/mouse suggestions? the ones I'm using now are wireless and have to be recharged/don't register half the time

they both have to be ergonomic firstmost but I was wondering what the deal was around mechanical keyboards or whatever they're called
