She brings the NRA's advocacy for gun supressors into the mix even though neither they nor supressors have anything to do with the shooting, then she says that we "need to put politics aside" and come together against the NRA for something they weren't involved in.
Ah okay. I thought you were just blaming her for politicizing the event. That's a fair point I suppose. I've got ideological disagreements with the NRA but they're obviously not responsible for any of this.

Didn't take long for our version of The Onion to get on board

Hard hitting satire:
Quote
Local cop, Uncle Rick Ridgeway, says that this is because idiots have a harder time getting their hands on machine guns than criminals.

“I think America needs to realise that it’s not really the criminals you need to worry about as such. I’d be more concerned about the weirdos,”

“Criminals use guns to help their efforts in making money through crime – they have much less interest in killing you for the sake of it,”

“Weirdos use guns to shoot up medical centres and primary schools for no reason other than the fact that they want to use their God-given rights,”

So do you have any solutions or do you want to keep acting like a hip, jaded piss-for-brains?

Make it harder for the mentally ill and those with a criminal background to get guns?

Not talking to you, but even then those measures are already in place across most of the US. If we're to take his brother at his reaction, this guy had no history of mental illness whatsoever.

So what's your solution? You dodged last time I asked

Normally I'd suggest more armed concert-goers, but this is different; no civilian armed with a gun would have any idea what was going on due to the way in which he attacked. In this case, it really falls on the hotel security. They let a man stay in one of their suites for three days with ten firearms, including the bullet-hell rifle he used to pull this off.

There is no real legislative way to have prevented this. If he used an automatic rifle like I think, those are already illegal across the country. If he used whatever you're suggesting, he would have gotten it regardless, because of how easy it is to get illegal weapons. Just look at Chicago.

If you want a good suggestion, it'd be to remove the motive, through better mental illness treatment and just teaching better morals in general. No one should be thinking like this guy, clearly.

So on that point (in any other situation), wouldn't you be concerned with the levels of casualties sustained by potentially 1000s of civilians opening fire at a target?

One thing to consider about the difference between the United States and other developed nations is that we've got far more wealth inequality and just a stuffload more guns in general than everyone else. Even if a full confiscation would fix this problem, it wouldn't be viable. Gun owners (legal or otherwise) wouldn't turn their weapons in, and the military wouldn't agree to force them to. That last bit has actually been established by a large survey of members of the military, although I can't find it right now.

In other words, guns are such a firmly entrenched part of our culture and economy that getting rid of all the guns isn't really on the table. People can debate whether that's a good or bad thing, but the more important question is what viable legislation can fix this problem.

however could we solve this

the biggest issue here is nevada's handicappedly lax gun laws

going hardline anti-gun is one thing, but nevada literally doesn't even register its firearms or require owners to have licenses. ffs.

and then you get handicaps like leisure posting all high and mighty as if this happened in a state with gun control laws already in place

Which is exactly why I think proper education can undercut most of the issues we have right now. It won't be immediate, but I think it's a logical approach. Your citizens won't kill eachother if they aren't idiots and value human life.
