motors....??? even if it is hydraulics it can be supplemented by motors for faster movement. have you not seen bostondynamics’ stuff? sure, massive robots cant move as fast without a stuffload more power, but it doesnt mean that they’re inevitably clunky. plus battery technology is improving a lot due to the potential demand for when electric cars and automatic driver cars kick off, as well as current demand for mobile industry
this, plus it doesn't need batteries right now tbh, the IC engine which was powering these mechs already would be effective at driving 3-phase motors for the arms and legs, but batteries would be better

didn't they like... tie?
No, the first round was simply a demonstration of the original bots and did not count to the final score.

you realize the whole things scripted right? this is more like wwe, not robot ufc
except my point is still a problem. if it's scripted then it's stuffty writing because it just kinda left me irritated on behalf of the japanese team. if it's unscripted it's also annoying that they acted like america won it fair and square.

robots are forever going to be controlled by hydraulics and therefore are forever clunky, imo

Electrically actuated artificial muscle!!

I only see this as a test bed for things to come. Every day the field of hydraulics and robotics advances in some new way. Artificial limbs are finally starting to lose some of that "clunky" feeling to them, becoming smoother and quicker to muscle response. I wouldn't be surprised if in the next 20 years we'd have something akin to the movie Real Steel.
