Author Topic: why do people hate b4v21?  (Read 8688 times)

badspot removed maps with the promise that it would enable a lot more development to happen. there was some stuff but it seemed like he mainly did it to add shaders and make the game look less stuffty for the steam release. the amount of new features added after v20 hasn't really outweighed the existence of maps for me.

some of my favorite servers (like Jorgur's) and experiences (just loving around on bedroom for hours with friends) were enabled by maps existing. certain aspects of the game are basically obsolete now. (like skiing is basically trash now because its hard to create surfaces that are conducive to it with bricks) I'm okay with all that though as long as I can go back and play v20 once in a while.

Btw the argument that "maps are for lazy people" is trash. Not everybody is always up to build a giant expansive map for them to richard around on.

tbh this. during the kompressor era i was pro-shaders but nowadays i really don't think a graphics update was worth the loss of maps

the maps-stifle-creativity argument is honestly just "people are playing with a different style than me and are wrong for doing it"- if someone wants to chillax on a good map, they might not want to search for a public save or go through the tedium of terrain building themselves

??? what v20 servers have you been playing on? absolutely none of them has used terrain bricks to make an entirely-terrain landscape?? what?? did you type this wrong?

Missed the 'B4' on v21. Regardless, if the map feature exists and terrain blocks don't, I don't think making it a point that people don't use brick-made terrain in B4v21 is a valid point lmao

I'm still a proponent of shaders but I think that the increase in difficulty of content creation should have been counterbalanced by a new platform to share stuff. A built-in RTB/Steam Workshop kinda deal that lets you share builds/terrain easier.

ModTer looks very good, but it's a pain in the ass to build, and it would have been most ideal if you could simply download someone's public terrain save on the fly and use it like a map.

"But Steam Workshop is evil, just use Glass instead!!!!! People will just upload viruses and delete their content out of spite!!!!"

While playing v20 is cool and all, I have to agree with Magus with that maps do discourage people to build, but on the other hand it's nice to explore the maps I guess

maps do discourage people to build
I want a show of hands and a collection of surveys of just how many people that this was the case with

the counterargument saying nobody is ditching v21 for v20 is moot since anyone playing v20 is someone not currently playing v21 and contributing to the playercount. i get the appeal of using v20, but its overall detrimental to the health of the game if anyone starts splitting off and playing an older version. theres no way to spin it to make it “better” for the game overall, only “its not as bad as you think it is”

and that graph is pretty bs, you guys keep going on about how v20 master server is dead yet you guys still play it. theres no foreseeable dropoff in the future unless the host of the primary servers people richard around on collectively agree to stop hosting

a lot of servers with maps were mostly whipped up, rarely > 10k bricks as they only had bases or building scattered around the map. sometimes none at all as people just placed a vehicle spawn and flew around. objectively less building - these days 10k bricks is pretty average.

that said im not arguing against the fun maps brought, just that constantly being nostalgic isnt going to benefit the game’s future.

I've definitely had more fun making maps with modter than using maps before v20.

I even released one.

< 167 players

What's even sadder about this is that 26 players is considered a split, it really puts into perspective how small the community who actually play Blockland is.

I think there's more important things to worry about, for one, how little players we have in general. We should be looking for ways to give Blockland more publicity, not fighting among ourselves.

People who play older versions of Minecraft don't get as much stuff as this. (and trust me, with how terrible it is to mod Minecraft, there are A LOT of people stuck in older versions who wish to keep their mods) I don't remember Graphictoria being as controversial as this, at least not until the end where the creator went nuclear. It had more players too.

I know it isn't fair to compare this nearly dead game to a game like Minecraft or Roblox, but it seems ridiculous to me that people are freaking out over a modded version of old versions of the game that has like 30 players tops.

This is cool man

There's been 32 updates since then.
