Author Topic: Steam won't work on college wifi - how to fix w/o VPN?  (Read 1845 times)

For whatever reason Steam does not let me go online when I use my college's wifi. What are the possible solutions to this that don't involve VPN's?

(only saying without VPNs because i cant afford to pay for a vpn service subscription)

if you have another computer you could put it at a friend's house and remote access the second computer with their wifi

depending on why you're at the college, and what college you are at, some colleges offer a vpn for their library service (due to paywalled academic material the college paid for, and wants to make accessible to students). you can check to see if they have one and if you can sign up for an account, esp if you are attending a class at the college.

god that sounds awful

if you don't want to pay these are 3 free VPNs:

SecurityKiss - free level has limited daily download allowance
VPNGate - Community run vpns
CryptFree - free (bandwidth limited) VPN access

You can try out Ultrasurf too. Free and very lightweight, just disable the options that makes it launch IE

I'm not sure if Ultrasurf would work with Steam. I thought it was contained to a browser window, like Tor?

Ultrasurf has a standalone program and acts as a free VPN, and will work on programs of course.

I'm not talking about the browser extension

do you go to BYU or some stuff? why are they blocking steam

i don't think op has the login info for the school's system

yes, i was implying there is nothing he can do without a vpn or using another network altogether

try using Psiphon
https://psiphon.ca/en/download.html

if it doesn't work at first, try enabling L2TP/IPSec mode

you could buy a raspberry pi, set it up at home, and use it as a vpn
