Detroit was also built economically on an industry that went nearly-100% defunct in the 1980s. That's not the fault of politics, it's just a bad economic shift. We don't make cars or steel there anymore, so nobody there has a job. Because nobody there has a job, the crime rate is humongous which pushes away new investors and business owners. It's a positive feedback loop and arguably the only way to break it is by trying to intervene with government.
Another note on the whole 'linked' thing: if you are willing to count friends and acquaintances as a 'link', it is probably possible to 'link' almost every single person on Earth to Hillary. Because social and business connections radiate out strongly, there's probably only six or fewer degrees of separation between any two people on Earth.
