Author Topic: Single-player shooters with good stories  (Read 3555 times)

Have there been any good and engaging single-player campaigns without RPG mechanics in any recent shooters? I'm talking about things similar to FEAR, or Half-Life. Or the fun, cinematic campaigns of Halo and Call of Duty. I just wanna shoot some bad guys and have a good story, I don't wanna bother with multiplayer or grind for anything.

I've played and enjoyed:
CoD4:MW 1-3 + Black Ops 1
Halo 1-4 + Reach
Half-Life 1-3 + A bunch of source mods
Black Mesa
Space Marine
FEAR 1-3 (Yes 3 was good)
Spec Ops: The Line
Max Payne 1-3
Hatred
Star Wars Battlefront 2
Titanfall 2 (RIP to my homie BT)
Boltgun
DOOM 1-2
New DOOM 1-2
Battlefield: Bad Company 2

Bad Games:
Turok 1-2 + Evolution
Doom 3
Counter-Strike: Condition Zero

was going to mention immersive sim games like deus ex or system shock since they have an emphasis on story stuff, but since you mentioned no rpg elements it got a bit complicated (unless you mean stuff like the fps fallout games). you could try selaco and trepang2 since you played f.e.a.r., they're pretty inspired by it.

Added both to my wishlist, I'll definitely try these out soon!

Black - PS2 (you'll need an emulator for this one, oldie but a goodie)
Sniper Elite 4
Prey

BLACK seems pretty interesting, and I do love me some destructible environments! And also I completely forgot Prey was a thing. I remember my friend liked it a lot, so I'll definitely add that to my wishlist as well.

This doesn't really fit, but if anyone is looking for a fun retro shooter, look for MDK and MDK2 on steam.

trepang2
started playing this recently and it is also a goated game

you doin' good there?
It's fun being the villain sometimes. It's really over the top and edgy, the gameplay and art are both decent as well. Would you be asking the same if I had remembered to also list POSTAL there?

(Now that I think of it, both are fun but neither really have anything more than a bare-bones excuse plot... But that plot serves the game well? Should either really be on the list?)

noticing a distinct lack of reboot wolfenstein. go by ratings and start with new order, they're all basically the same game but with various slight differences in mechanics or weapons and a new storyline

I heard the newer ones were really disappointing for some reason. Guess I'll have to try it out myself and see why.

at the very least, new order is quite solid. the reviews about the rest vary because of mostly story reasons, usually meh-to-bad character writing - the gameplay itself is still good

Metro 2033, STALKER, Bioshock, Dishonored, Prey.
