Also a few years from now, have fun with your brick'd copy of vista and get on board the man-train of the next windows OS which will likely be subscription based.
Wtf, subscriptions for an operating system? That sounds ungodly gay. I think I'll buy a mac if that ever happens.

not that i ever expect to lose my connection to the net no matter when or where. but requiring net access for constant verification for common computer use will suck.

but for a game i don't see it falling through that badly. if they didn't want to support it anymore they could just easily patch it to no longer need to be net-verified anymore. by that time, its day would have passed anyway, and pirate's wouldn't hurt sales much.

games have proven more time tested then apps anyway

Is this really coming out, September?

ive already reserved mine at gamestop.com for 9/7/08
along with creature creator that is out at 6/17

That would be a terrifying reality to be in, indeed, yet it's so very plausible as well. And I'm sure people will be there buying into it.

You need only look at the current history of attitudes from computer/gaming customers to see where the pattern is going. Not a few years ago most video gamers wouldn't have accepted monthly fees or pay to download content even for MMOs, but now today they're all for it in their games. You'll see soon most customers will be for a monthly OS as well.

You can not be certain though that they will actually do that. I have little reason to believe they will. Don't forget at least for Spore it has the same publisher who willfully shuts down multiplayer support for every yearly Madden game.

i still see someone who is mad they cant warez it.

you pretty much need net access ANYWAY to play the damn game. as any and ALL content is created by other users and is what generates into your world randomly. this wasn't a little content gimmick, this was a main basis of what the game was.
so inconvenient i guess right?
you cant claim that worse case scenario WILL happen to make some point. i could just as well tell all sorts of possible stories why anything we buy will fail.

My argument doesn't have so much to do with just Spore as it does with online activation in general. Of course I'm not 100% certain that authentication will eventually shut down and a patch won't be released to remedy it, I just predict it to be very probable, as now they actually have the ability to shut off your game where they couldn't before. The reason I assume the worst is because I see numerous past examples of things happening in the industry with very few instances of any good outcomes. Basically, Murthy's law.

I find it unfortunate that you really insist I'm just a pirate who's saying all of this because I'ld want to crack Spore, that I'm not legitimately making these statements. Also, what makes you think this method of copy protection will trully put an end to piracy, if you think I'm pissed off about that?

Hell, look at the post made by Badspot. He probably said it best in simple terms.

isnt blockland the same? sure 1 time activation online. but what if you reinstall or reformat? and the game is just no longer supported? there goes 20 bucks.
game developers cant be told the same as recording artists. that if they are any good at all, people will still pay to see them in concert.
piracy is tougher on ones who's income is more narrow. i could see them trying new things.

Bisjac, if you are talking about limited installs all you have to do once your installs run out is call EA tech support

im not talking about that. we talking about single players games that require online activation to even play at all.

Like a CD key?
Spore only requires authentication when you install the game and when you download new content.

Update: They changed their mind.  Possible "New Coke" marketing tactic?

My personal feelings: Copy protection only affects legitimate users.  Pirates don't have to deal with it.  I have had many many legitimately purchased games fail to work because of the copy protection.  I wish they would just drop the whole thing.

Also, if you think online authentication won't ever get shut off and leave you with a shiny $60 coaster, think again: http://yro.slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=08/04/22/2130225

I swear I'm just going to pack up my NES, SNES and the last CRT television on earth and move to a cabin in the woods.  I'll play games that start working the instant you hit the power button and eat animals that I've killed with a black powder rifle.  Maybe I'll take a Commodore 64 too in case I feel like making some games.
Blockland for commodore! Coming soon to a wood near you

oh and the only difference is that the madden games are the same game over and over again
