I've only played the second and the third and from what I can tell, you play as Snake and you go through an epic story to try and take down these big machine things called Metal Gears.

in mgs 2 there were 3 metal gears :(

but in mgs 3 there was the shagohod, which was basically a metal gear prototype :(

and in mgs 1 i remember there being metal gear rex and liquid controlled it. the ninja died from it.

there are also bosses throughout the games
