Author Topic: New Computer  (Read 9535 times)

Reactor worker made this computer for me (well...he picked out the parts).

And I was wondering, what else do I need. I mean, I have a hard drive and stuff, but what cables and stuff do I need?

Also, there are ports on top of the case. do I need anything special for that?

$194.99  E8400 Dual Core Intel processor

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819115037

This is widely accepted as the best dual core processor on the market. Its 3.0 GHZ is top of the range and the socket it uses (LGA775) is widely available with hundreds of compatible motherboards to choose from. Its 45nm design is efficient for cooling and leaves plenty of room for overclocking.

$109.99   GIGABYTE GA-P35-DS3L

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813128059

This motherboard, although certainly not the "latest and greatest" is a high performance board with features that compliment the other components in the list. It's LGA775 socket matches the CPU and the x16 PCIe slot works with almost any of the latest graphics cards on the market. With support for up to 8 GB of RAM and several PCI slots, this board has plenty of room for future upgrades. It comes at an amazing price too! :D

$299.99  GeForce 9800 GTX

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814130339

The only card currently more powerful than the GTX is the GX2 but being several hundred dollars cheaper, and only a couple of FPS behind it, the GTX is an amazing card. Able to play almost any game at maximum settings and resolutions (perhaps not Crysis, that depends heavily on resolution and settings) this card is a beast. It takes up 2 expansion slots on the I/O panel and will typically cover up at least one of the PCI slots (they're usually never used anyway). EVGA (the manufacturer) offers a Step-Up program where you can trade in your card that you just bought (like the GTX) and pay the difference to get a better card within 90 days of purchase; a good deal if you desperately need that next big thing (and your wallet can take it).

$79.99x2 ($169)  G.SKILL 4GB (2 x 2GB) RAM (2)

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820231122

Good brand, good quality, good price. Chose to go with DDR2 800 over the DDr 1066 because of the ridiculous $100 difference which really won't perform any less than the 1066. NOTE: there is a bug in Vista which will cause a BSOD if you try to run the machine the first time round with more than 2 GB of memory installed. Simple fix is, only install 1 stick of memory to start with, install operating system, updates automatically, then turn off PC and install second stick.

$129.99  CORSAIR 520 Watt Powersupply

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817139001

The important things to know about this product are, A) its a top quality powersupply from a well-know, well trusted brand. B) It should easily be able to power all of your components and should provide for a stable system. C) It features a modular cable system so you don't end up with a messy case full of wires you don't need (trust me, that comes in handy later).

$89.99 Western Digital 500 GB HDD

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16822136073

While the hard drive is certainly not the most exciting part of a computer, it is one of the most important. This drive features a vast amount of space and the speed is excellent. The price is good too. One of the higher quality brands. On a side note, some gamers choose to use raptor hard drives. These are basically very high speed hard drives (10,000 RPM) which can increase read and write speed. The increase in performance is neglible, but the price difference is huge, often costing hundreds more for a HDD half the capacity. You could get 2 of these HDDs and use them in a RAID array if you wish; check wikipedia for more info on RAID.

$129.00  Antec Nine Hundred Black Steel ATX Mid Tower Computer Case

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16811129021

$35.99   ASUS Black DVD/CD burner

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16827135156

Again, not really an exciting component but necessary. This SATA compatible drive will allow you to read and write to DVDs and CDs of every shape and sort at fast speeds.

TOTAL COST FOR ABOVE COMPONENTS: $1179.93

OPTIONAL STUFF:

Operating System

Windows XP 64 bit

Monitor

Better buy XP before the 30th or whenever they run out.

Also, a Quad core processor would be nice (intel needed)

I found a sweet website where I can buy the best quad core computer there is along with speakers, monitor, keyboard, etc for $1,900. (Canadian)
If you think about, that's actually a really good price for a pre-built computer. :D

Can someone please tell me what else I need (to reiterate, I need to know if there is anything I need in the lines of cables,  conducting fluid (I guess it could be handy)

The motherboard comes with 2 SATA cables and the powersupply comes with the rest.

The intel CPU coolers come preapplied with thermal grease, but if you are installing an aftermarket cooler, I would recommend the Arctic Silver compound 2.

Quad core isn't really a good decision right now as very little software takes advantage of the 4 cores and it really doesn't future proof you as the new processors are coming out soon anyway and will need a completely new cpu slot type.

Windows Vista 64 bit will allow you to use your computer to it's full potential. XP will be a roadblock.

Get a power mac and get windows XP

Get a power mac and get windows XP
QFT

Except, don't get XP unless you REALLY have to... the only reason to is for games, soooo... ya know. You prolly do want XP :P

Or get an iMac, they pwn. (Power Mac = tower, much more powerful, iMac = no tower, huge screen, pwnage :cookieMonster: )

If you like the one on the left more then I have bad news for you.

You're a homoloveual!

Get a power mac and get windows XP

Allow me to point something out.

Out of bordom, I created a Mac that I attempted to be just as powerful as my computer. However, they're RAM stops at 4Gb (Mine is 8Gb), and the graphics card stops at # NVIDIA GeForce 8800 GS w/512MB GDDR3  (Mine is 9???). Also, using the mac, I got a slightly bigger screen (two inches).

Now, how much more expansive is the mac in comparison to my computer?

$100-no
$200-no
$400?-no
$700?-no
$900?!?-Yes

It is a full $900 more to buy an apple (that is worse then my own computer)then to make my own computer.

Consider yourself pwned.

Here we go. I attempted to make a computer (Using apple) that was more similar to my own. In order to be this, I must use Mac Pro. I was unable to. Here are the diffrences:

Screen: 23" (mine: 22")
Graphics card: nVidia 8800 (mine: 9800)
CPU: Quad core (Mine: Dual Core)

So...How much of a diffrence?

$3398.

I could make three computers that are as powerful as that for the same amount. ($4898)

Tripple toast:

Made my computer at dell. Some difrences again (can't be bothered to look them up)

Me: $1,500
Dell: $2,200
Apple: $4,898

(the above are all in USD)

Suck it, macs.

You gotta consider though that a Quad core is around $1,000

if i can have near double the power of any available mac, at half the price of thier best. AND play games?

well jesus, i just will never really understand the mac fandom
they must truly be the most dedicated people on earth, to overlook a mess that big

Whoops, did you mean $270?

Also, most expensive mac (for boredom) $25k

can't beat 32Gb of RAM. (not like it would be useful, excluding bragging)

Yep, you've got it right. The mac fandom has no reason, and it is pure idiocy.

Apples, go die. I know three of my friend's have (Cooling system broke and fried the computer, [both times] ha ha)
