Metal Gear Solid (need help understanding it)

So I just got Metal Gear Solid 4 today randomly. I went to the store to get some game to take up my time and found out it was out today and I was like "oh, why not?" and got it.
Now see, I have only played the original MGS before, and at that only the first level. Can anyone give me a recap on the story as I have no idea what the hell is going on?

im going to summerize it as this is something very massive, i might not actully mention any names to say.lets start with basics.

Metal Gear Solid(btw, was originaly named Metal Gear but soon 3D gaming came in so Solid was placed to represent "3D")is about the destruction of a weapon. The weapon is named Metal Gear. it was first created by Octogon (Ya, the guy that helps you with that small stuff robot) which was a "REX" type. This was a cross of Infentry and artillery as infentry can go anywhere and artillery can shoot massive shells (Exact opossite for opossite type ETC:Infentry fail at weapons)so Octogon made REX. REX was capable of shooting nuclear warheads without being detected (shoot and forget) and can be shot anywhere at any distance.Long story short, Snake destroys REX, badguys find plans and replicate REX and modifyed it (Thus having diffrent versions),America make another Metal Gear (RAY) which is better then REX, destroying it but RAY has no Nuclear capabilitys. PMCs make their own Metal Gear (Gekko: thos robots that make cow noises? which i lol at) to use against war which is where the main area is which is what your playing as.

btw, any idea why Gekko "spues" gas ontop of a body it just killed?

Actually I wiki'd it last night so I have a pretty good idea what is going on. Except for vamp and those 4 weird things that look like something the Combine thought up. Whats up with those guys?

You'll learn about the BB units as you progress through the game. You'll learn how Vamp became how he is later on, but he was in Metal Gear Solid 2. He was part of the Dead Cell team. He has superhuman abilities, and is immortal. Towards the end of Metal Gear Solid 2, you have to save Emma Emerich, Otacon's sister. After you shoot him, while he's falling, he slits Emma's throat. They both die. After that, everyone believed that Vamp died. 5 years passed, and he suddenly shows up in the Middle East.

Also, Snake isn't really 60 something years old. He's really 42.

Otacon* didn't actually make REX. It was made from his design scheme.

And I think that they spue gas on their dead enemy is because:

[1] To clarify that they're dead.
[2] Cleansing the inside of any nanomachines

Also, does anyone have a clue as to why the Gekko's bleed when they're legs are severed?

Oh forget. Laughing Octopus was one of the most... err.... scary bosses I have ever faced in a game sence PsiOps. But perhaps its because I chose to battle her at one in the morning. -.-

Also, does anyone have a clue as to why the Gekko's bleed when they're legs are severed?

Its the same leg design as RAY, it bleeds cause its nano(things) that repair damage, like a human, now obviously if you cut off the whole leg its not going to grow a new leg or literetly put back the servered leg.

and im pretty sure Octogon made REX, proof me wrong if you like.
