i average 46 degrees with two 9800GX2's
and all i do is turn up the GPU on board fans

with the fans on stock 10%, my comp can idle at 78 degrees

modern processors with the standard heatsinks don't even get hot anymore, so thats not even something to worry about

modern parts don't even get hazerdly hot unless you overclock, and even then standard fans are fine

46 degrees while the cards are under full load? I call bullstuff.

no they idle at 46 when doing nothing
in a game they can go up to 56. but ive never seen em at 60+

having good hardware, it dont need to clock high to meet needs. so they dont even get hot.
stuffty hardware trying to run a game on high settings, yeah you can expect it to be pumping

good hardware does Not= spinning the clock faster then another model could.

i look down on pics of rigs, people trying to brag about some huge fancy cooling system.
it means they don't have good enough parts for their needs, so they hitting those limits

fancy cooling = classic "hide the problem instead of solving it"

Or they overclock to the loving max. The computer shown is two years old so it's probably clocked pretty high. I typically find the cooling the most interesting part of the computer. Almost everything else about the computer involves plugging in a part. Advanced cooling systems require more thinking and more experimentation.

This fish tank computer is good, but I think another way would work better. Enclose the whole computer in a metal box. A common metal like copper would be ideal. It has good heat transfer capabilities and a low price relative to the scope of the project. Encase the entire box in radiators/heat sinks. This would cause a lot of the heat inside the box to disperse out through the box and through the radiators. Along with that you have the pump/radiator combo actually circulating the fluid through the box. An obvious flaw I see with the fish tank is that it is clear and in the sunlight. The sun rays penetrate the tank and heat up the hardware. With a completely metal system much of the heat from any sun rays would either bounce off or be taken care of by the radiators.

Now since you're already spending a mega-forget-ton of money through materials and time spent you'll want to throw in the best parts and overclock them until they can't go any farther. If it worked out correctly you could be running default specs at around room temperature.

You could just get a fancy liquid nitrogen cooling system, but where's the design, experimentation, and fun in that?

P.S. I excluded a bunch of points in my text wall but I'm sure you can figure it out. Too tired to type more at the moment.

PROTIP: Read

Anyway: This is how you build a PC. It runs at about 45oC at full load for twelve hours whle running 3DMark08.

PROTIP: I did read your loving post, like I always do. I understood that you were saying that the Dell XPS was less "evil" than Alienware. I knew weren't encouraging people to go with XPS or Alienware.

As for special cooling and overclocking...meh. Why spend all this extra money on fancy cooling when you could just be buying better parts? I mean, sure if you have the best parts available at the the time of purchase, then you should start considering Overclocking and some extreme cooling, but cheaping out on parts and having some epically expensive liquid cooling system isn't logical.

I guess what really matters is what you, the consumer, care about. Some prefer to hit the "sweet spot" for hardware where they aren't spending too much, but are getting great performance. Others like having unique cases and exciting cooling options. Others just want extreme hardware which eat benchmarks for breakfast.

Im making about 100 a month with chores, my mom said I needed 1/2 of it before order. So add christmas money, and walla. Then I pay it off.

Didn't surprise me that bisjac was the first reply. :P

Wtf get a job

No need to be a richard. He must already be doing plenty of chores to earn $100 and he likely isn't old enough to get a job.

My Minnesota gaming computer im getting rid of when i go back to the office.
its a crapload to be shipping, so ill be selling it with wicked low price for pick up.
