Let me take a crack at what I've seen from the videos about what Gmod is;

its a sandbox mod where you host servers aon preselected map, and open entering a server you have a tool box of pre-downloaded items that work with other items to create fun and interesting results.

It's because you've shot an NPC or have done damage to yourself. Gmod uses the source engine, half life 1 uses the quake engine, I think.

HL2.exe is used by all source engine games, just that it's modified for some reason.
This is probably to be detected by Gmod or something or just the way they do it.

And the shooting NPC bug/self damage is a bug on some computers.
My old computer didn't do that and I can't tell about new one yet.

Preselected map?
You select the map, unless you're using Pre as "Before" instead of "already being chosen".

I use no pirated software. My mom used her credit card, we bought both games from Steam, and installed them. Yes I have a steam account.

But I also had a 3 Day Guest Pass for TF2, and Gmod was using it. Would that affect it?

Uh, you need a Source game for it, so probably.  Get VALVe games, now.  But not L4D if you're using it for GMod, I don't think it works, unless it gives you the SDK.
