lighting often depends on the map you're using which is why i only use maps with 0 lighting
tinker around with bloom/post processing FX, and try using lights and lamps, and check out this addon

Just a random idea but I swear there were like glowsticks back then? I haven't touched the game in a while but I feel like that might be a good place to start playing around with until you get your intended effect. You could probably make them look like laser shots given a bit of editing. Or just make em' in post with glowy horizontal lines.

I remember I had some scene full of Steves and everything from Minecraft going and killing a bunch of monsters.

i was only younger back then so i did some cringey things at the time lol but i'm pretty sure they're around in the workshop somewhere
