I think Children would be more attracted to licensed themes because they know the characters.

How is it selling out?

They are kissing ass to popular tv shows or movies to make more profit for themselves because the tv shows/movies are more mainstream. That is selling out.

I highly doubt lego is doing it for the children. I think they are taking advantage of the fact children will buy anything that is based off these over rated/over hyped shows and movies.
For example: Lego Ben 10.

Start expecting some twilight lego sets in the future, I can already see it happening.
