High poly is better, at least 1000 polys for environments and 10,000 polys for characters. You also need to work on your unwrapping and texturing skills.

I think you have it backwards.  The environment needs less polys than a character?  The thing you look at most of the time you play a game is the thing that fewer polys go into?
