It's kind of like a foregrip. The skeleton handle mostly for carrying. And technically, yeah, it's part of a "my hand is literally right there" reloading.

Ah. It just looks like it would take a lot more effort to hold like that.

Well, if the hands were real and they could contour nicely, youl'd see that the gun rests on his hand, rather than him holding the mag to hold up the gun. There is a divet/gap between the mag and the handle.
