Do we have a unique use for each material?
eat the wood and burn the stone. :cookieMonster:

Do we have a unique use for each material?
We could have it a little like this:
Wood:
- Building
- Fires
Metal:
- Constructing weaponry (maybe)
- Building
Stone:
- Building
-???
Water:
- Thirst (If we had a script for thirst)
- Constructing water bricks (for moats, maybe)

We would have to have advantages and disadvantages for stone, metal, wood building.  For example, wood would be weaker, but easier to find; metal, which would be a little bit stronger but harder to find; and stone would be somewhere in the middle.

Tom

See, all three of them would be used for building. What's the point of that?

Hey, who is this mod being given to on the team, just wondering because I would like to test it out on my server, with the HUD! :p

Btw, after some mis-savings and a few rough drafts, I am now starting the final map.

I agree, stone is rather pointless unless AGlass had something in mind.  Metal has two uses however, and it's nice to be able to have an alternate resource, if you run out of wood. Or, as I said before, metal could be stronger than stone and stone stronger than wood.  Or some other advantage/disadvantage like lifetime: the rate of that materials deterioration.

Make resources required for items and stuff too. What kind of gun would use stone in its construction? You'd need some metal (for the mechanisms/barrel) and some wood (for the body) to make a rifle.
Stone wouldn't really be used in item manufacture so it'd be a good thing to use for building, but since it's harder to get than wood you'd need to use some wood too or spend too long finding materials.
Wood would also be used for fire, and be flammable as bricks go, whereas stone isn't flammable, making it a more useful candidate for building in that respect also.

Bullets would be able to chip away stone, so you could destroy a stone base with some work, but metal would be basically indestructable for that purpose, and thus adds the extra security, however it's used in item manufacture and is somewhat rare. Wood, of course, would be easy to destroy, especially using melee weapons (ax/sword) so a wooden base wouldn't be very secure at all, however it'd still be better than nothing.

Allow people to select from a limited range of paint colours for placing materials. Having a set of shades of brown/grey/whatever for each type instead of just one as well as some brighter colours (show "team alliance" or whatever) would be nice.

Perhaps use wood and a 'paint' material to place bricks in standard colors, just wood for browns, a set of brownish-grays for stone and some plain grayscale for metal - keep each resource to its own rows on the paint set, so you'd have
Painted I (Standard)
Painted II (Bolds)
Painted III or Glass? (Softs or trans)
Wood (Browns)
Stone (Brown-grays)
Metal (Grayscale)

Idea: Placing bricks until you find/make a Spray Can item makes planted bricks a random one of those resource colours. I'm not sure how you'd choose which resource to use, though.

You can use the "Painting has been disabled" thing on clients, too.

Couldn't stone be used in making knifes, and if combined with wood, spears?

I would like to have more materials because it would make it more fun, and make more sense. I would like more of Space Guy's input on the matter of building with each material, and then the weapons and stuff.

Answer the damn question! o_O

Metal never deteriorates over time, but is weaker than stone to weapons fire.

If you want to spend the time to make each resource unique, have multiple different purposes, be limited in colors, and a painting script, do it. Unfortunately, resources should have been being worked on for a long time and apparently there's no progress. If people are actually going to get it done this time, do it.

@Oasis: Not sure who it's going to be given to yet. The scripters I guess for sure, since they'll take it even if the rest of the team doesn't want em to :P , not sure who else though.

Edit: Also, don't host open betas at all anymore. We're getting close enough we don't want everyone playing it. All the people that post input regularly can get in. I'll PM a pass to everyone worthy, hosters and players alike.

Ffffffuuuuu-
Still got 4 people to send it to. I'll send it to them later I guess :/

Here's mah reasoning/plan:

The reason we're going to do closed betas is because, once the mod is very near completion/completed, we'll do a sort of blog. In it, several people will be able to post, and will document their time on the beta servers. They'll do it like they're actually in the game, though - like they're a blockhead posting. For example, "Today we raided base x. Band y of blocheads was there. We killed them all and took what they had." This is to get people to want to roleplay when the mod comes out. People with posting rights on the blog are required to have good grammar and be able to write an engaging story.
Just noticed a typo lol. Too late.

The resources have been worked on for a little while. Tom has the basis done, with some help from me and Kalphiter. I just want to include more resources and then it will be almost done. I plan on making a text file system for cost of resources for items and such, other wise, they will have a default value. It will be written like this:

DatablockName|Amount of wood| Amount of metal|Amount of Stone|Amount of ???|Amount of ???

I will devise a script to read this, and it will get all of these amounts and the Datablock name (maybe the UIName since it's more user friendly) It will help.
