I started a fort and a loving fire imp decided to burn EVERYTHING.

Any losses?

The King's a loving GOBLIN! Not sure what to make of this at all, but it's awesome so I'll just roll with it.
It could be worse, once, my queen arrived as an elf wearing a cloak and a pair of socks and mittens.
I quickly fed her to my thriving carp pit.

I want to keep him though, he's like a warlord. He doesn't drink booze and I can't assign him any rooms so I'm kind of worried he'll go on a rampage. He's also purple and naked and likes to hang out in the dining room.

That sounds amazing, I really want to try this game but I'm not a text based adventure type of person. Do you also have that gif of the child attacking the champion?

The purple was a joke, I believe
Nobles are shown as purple... and nobody really likes nobles.

Here's a good tutorial and a download of Dwarf Fortress with a custom tileset so there's no ACSII graphics.

Personally, I tried the tile sets, and I prefer the ASCII graphics.  It may take a tiny bit more to get used to, but the games looks better in my opinion.

Some nobles are fine or even great, such as a book keeper.  However  there are nobles who will decide that anything they want can somehow be made in your fort, and threaten to imprison everyone if it isn't made.

Well his icon is a purple goblin, and he isn't wearing anything so I just assume he's naked AND purple. Makes for a funnier mental image.

I'm not sure which one you mean but I do have the old Adventure Mode child assault

Adventure mode is basically the Rogue-Like mode and describes all the combat in great detail. It's basically the text-based roguelike mode of the game that you can play or not if you want (I've never even tried Adventure mode myself). Fortress mode leaves a bit more to your imagination, it's still gruesome as far as ascii graphics goes and the only real logging you get are major announcements (like finding precious gems and job cancellations).

Fortress Mode is more about the micromanagement then the text-based stuff. Some people love to indulge in their favorite dwarfs' histories and likes and dislikes, but all that stuff isn't really important in the gameplay itself. If you get a tileset then the game boils down to a crazy sim-like game with crappier graphics, more customization and allot of violence everywhere.

Gah, too many snatchers and theifs attacking me, but no siege.

How many dwarfs you got? You need atleast 80 to become susceptible to sieges

I loooveee this game.

Right now I'm trying to figure out and tab some of the dwarf fortress music on guitar :)

Only have 50 dwarfs.

For absolutely no reason at all I'm carving a huge hole into the mountain side.

I think I might start a megaconstruction or something.

One cool thing I once made was a giant cavern room underground where I built a fortress completely out of iron, put some vents here and there in it and then filled the entire room with magma. Basically a separate fortress in a pool of lava with magma also running through it.

Right now I'm trying to build a pressurized magma delivery system, I'll get back to you on that later. Hopefully it will make lava erupt out of the ground and kill everything in localized areas.

Gah, my mayor went off to mine my huge hole and got himself stuck at the bottom of the pit.

Now I have a dead mayor.

I'm thinking of genning a new world until I can sort out what to do in my old one.

I think I might try a hermit style and kill off 6 of my starting dwarves, but I'm also thinking of making a castle or something

actually, I think I'll make a giant lake and make my fortress in the center. Giant drawbridges, giant tower in the center, possibly magma lake.

I embarked, and noticed some obsidian nearby. Does this indicate magma or can it occur naturally?
