Dwarves suspend "forget the world with magma" doomsday tower: snooty nobles arrived

Also i did the calculations, I need around 100 windmills to get the thing going haha

Bumpiness

How are your forts going guys? Anything new?

After a one-week ban, I return with news of carp with wheels on the end of tentacles.

Sorry for the double toast but:
I've posted a map of my latest fortress, do keep an eye out for any updates.

That's a pretty cool settup you got going, is that loving carp in the lake though? Any losses yet?

Unfortunately, the lake had absolutely no creatures in it. Fortunately, the only loss I've had is the stray enchanted weapon I had chained to the entrance, and the crippled miner, but he's not dead yet.

So much happened to my fort since I last posted about the magma pump thing

- Goblin sieges, usual stuff
- Elf diplomat asking for 50 trees cap for the year, comes back next year and I deforested the entire area to make room for the eventual lava pool (about 2500 trees, not done yet haha)
- Dragon attacked!
- I caught it and tamed it :D
- My mayor bought it so now I have a legendary stonecrafting bad-ass mayor running around with a pet dragon. Should be hilarious if he ever goes nuts (and he might, the dude seriously hates flies)
- 3 artifact weapons (2 maces, always maces, and 1 crossbow forget yeah) and a few armor pieces produced, notably a Shield and pair of greaves. I have 2 legendary armorers and 2 legendary weaponmakers pumping out high quality iron stuff

Things I wish I had

- Flux :(
- Elephants to help my marksdwarves gain skills
- A river, or better yet, an elevated Aquifer (most awesome thing that ever happened to me, only found one once)
- Bauxite

But my next fort will probably be on a glacier, going to look for an aquifer too while I'm at it. I'll also get a magma pipe so I could make Obsidian farms. I've always wanted to build a fort out of ice and obsidian.

I'm picking up on this game again, just started a fort right next to an open chasm with some hematite as a steel source.
more interesting things to come.

I could never make it far in DF, i always got about to my first migrant wave or whatever then i just didnt know what to do with myself...

like id make rooms and thats it then some random crap would happen and we'd run outta food or something.

Do you have farms and stuff going? (And if you do, do you give the farm-plots new crop orders when the season changes? Season changes turn all farm plot orders to Fallow or leave bare)

:( Brand new DF, with some graphics pack installed.
EDIT: THis turns out to be from muffinmix's pack. SOmething broke somewhere for me. Reinstalled using COlten's DF. Only problem, when I put down a down staircase, nothing appears on the level below. If I remember correctly, something should appear, correct?

In order to move between levels you have to press < or >.
Also, it looks like the wrong shade of pink was used for that pack or you installed it wrong. I'm not sure though, I don't use graphic packs.

You might have something set up wrong in your DF folder/data/init/init.txt file. Did you download Mayday's pack before putting in the character set I posted? That would fix it I figure. WARNING: The z-level up/down keys switch from < or > to / or * on the numpad with this pack. It makes a few things easier, conflicts with a few minor things but it's a good trade off. You can always switch it back to < or > by going in DF folder/data/init/interface.txt and finding the lines [CURSOR_UP_Z:  and [CURSOR_DOWN_Z: with CTRL + F

Also to build stairs between Z-levels, say, digging down, you need to dig Down staircases on the top level, then Up or Up/Down staircases directly below them. This allows your dwarves to travel between both those Z levels now. Up/Down staircases are both types of staircase built in one so you can simply stack up/down staircases instead of having to set up another up and down staircase adjacent to your other stairs to go down to the next level.

I happen to be adept at slaying carp. Though, I must note that making all the ocean fish, including sharks and whales spawn in rivers was not the best of ideas.
