Also note that this is just a cross section, it's a big cube-ish thing.

Regulith, this is how to locate lava underground.

You could always do the sand glitch while underground. While making a straight tunnel, dig just to the right 3 blocks high. You will need sand or gravel. Stand just less than halfway in, more in the tunnel, then place two sand in the 3 block high section. You should be able to see half inside the ground and easily locate lava.

Edit²: Checked the forums, apparently when Minecraft is forcefully closed by something like a computer shutdown it loses the save files. Bullstuff.
