I built a house in the nether.  I have windows and ghasts keep flying into them trying to pathfind their way to kill me. :D

I just use the natural ever-burning stone in the walls to make lights.  They double as incinerators.

I can't play in the Nether because there are AT LEAST 5 Ghasts surrounding my portal. :(

why not make it out of the glowing rocks?

Because fire is cooler.  And it fits the theme a lot better, and it is semi-unlimited, it is easier for me to find one iron ingot per 255 (or whatever) fires than one glowing block per light.

Also, how can you place water in the nether?  No matter what block I place it on, it just evaporates.

But luckily I managed to sneak by the spider and gather some materials for items.

If you dig out a small space, 3x3 works best, you can go into it and place a roof 3 blocks from the floor of the one block deep hole (so you have 2 meters of standing space), giving you a space to hit the feet of enemies while they can't do anything to you.  Zombie pigmen drop cooked pork.  This also works in avoiding ghasts if you stand in the middle.
