Go to Windows Button + R , enter %appdata%/.minecraft and go itno the BIN folder.
Delete the Version file there.
Run minecraft , and it should update.

All i did was load it on Paint.net, used the pencil tool, edited it, and it worked.
So yes, i did do it all by myself.
